The Bad Beat Story Of The Year

Ok wont mention names but this is truly a crazy poker bad beat story,
I get dealt 2 of diamonds and 2 of clubs in a $1/2 ring game with roughly $72.00 at the table, the pot gets raised $2.00 preflop 4 of us call, flop comes A of spades, 2 of hearts, 9 of hearts, then small blind bets $5.00 and three people call, I am thinking I have a set I must call right? So I call, turn comes up 2 of spades, I am thinking woohoo 4 of a kind I'm laughing all the way to the bank, so small blind is first to act he bets all in for $32.00, next guy calls with his $16.00, and next to guys go all in as well leaving it up to me wheather or not I want to risk my entire stack on my four 2's, well I have to call I am thinking I cant be beat, river comes up 4 of spades, small blind was playing A/9 off suit hes out, next short stack was playing flush draw hes out, next guy was playing a small suited pair of hearts hes gone, the one guy who had more money at the table than me was playing 5/3 SPADES and caught his damn straight flush beating my piddly four 2's, now to go all in on a hope and a prayer like that before the river, to me this was a bad beat am I wrong?
Thanks for listening still burns my butt that that many people would risk there entire poker stack on a draw and catch.

Ok, it was a bad beat, but you shouldn't be in the hand to begin with IMO. Low PP are not very good.

That's rough man. He had a straight draw and a flush draw, so I guess he figured that he would try to push you out and if it didnt work, he'd have a decent chance to still win. Little did he know you had such a good hand

I feel for you, having a 4 of a kind beat is really hard to swallow. I don't think you played the hand wrong at all. Yes, low pp aren't the best but you did hit your set and when the 4th 2 came out on the turn you must have thought you had it locked. Sorry man.

Don't listen to 'em, you played it ok. I don't have a problem calling a small raise preflop with a made pair. If you hit the set, good, if you miss get out cheap. Only thing is, instead of calling on the flop, you should have raised. You probably would have gotten the one guy out of there.

No problem playing the dueces either. Implied odds are great. I can understand putting the breaks on when you hit your quads, but why didnt you raise on the flop? What were you waiting for? Someone to draw out a flush or a straight or even a higher set? It's only a bonified bad beat if you played the whole hand right from the start.

With the 2 hearts on the flop, you definitely should have been raising with your set. Although, my guess is that the A/9 offsuit would have gone all in at that point, and probably the suited hearts would call. I'd like to think the 5s3s would have folded, but he may not of.

Definitely a tough one.

holdem rule #832: NEVER SLOW PLAY TRIPS.

granted, no rule is so etched in stone that it cant (or shouldnt) be broken, but this is one that i adhere to about 80% of the time. if you are lucky enough to hit a set (that is, a pair in hand and hit the third on the flop, as opposed to one in hand and two on the board), play them fast. bet and reraise. why? other people who have already hit the flop (especially if you hit middle or low set and there are high overcards on board) will likely call your bet anyway. if no one else hit, you are putting in a bet that probably wouldnt get called anyway, so your chances of drawing more money from your opponents is slim. and secondly, you do not want to be outdrawn! trips are not so powerful a hand that you should get into the habit of slowplaying them. if you flop a near-nut flush or a boat, of course slow play; but trips are susceptible to losing to so many better hands that they seem to get outdrawn as often as they dont. [in this isntance especially, with 4 people in the hand, you should have bet a couple people out of the pot.]
