Auto-rebuy questions

I'm new to cash games and am having trouble deciding how, when and to what extent I should use auto-rebuy.

I've been very conservative with my bankroll with sng buy-ins...using around 3%.

In cash games, how do I keep track of the percentage of my bankroll if I'm using auto-rebuy?

If I buy-in at minimum, will re-buy keep me at that amount? I thought it would top me off at the max.

Also, it just seems so much harder to keep track of how much you're winning or losing while you're at the table. Is this generally considered to be a good thing or bad thing?

First off, do not watch or track your bankroll as you play, golden rule #1.


Play, then look. So grind your session for a few hours with xxx bankroll, at the end of the hourly session, check your cashier and record wins/losses. This way you can have auto-rebuy continuously active and makes life alot easier.

If you have PT3 or HEM it automatically does everything above for you, recommended for sure if you are serious about the game.

How many FULL buy-ins do you have in your BR for the level you're playing?

You have no need to watch your BR that closely. In fact it will likely be good for your game if you don't. I would recommend buying in full and using auto-top up any time you fall below 100bbs. So if you fold out of the bb the next hand you start with 100bb again before you post the sb.

You're in no real danger of BR decimation and stopping yourself from thinking about your BR should be good for you.

I agree. You must have the mindset that once the money is on the table, it is not a part of your bankroll anymore (until the session is over).

I can see the significance of getting my mind off of watching my money throughout my play. Something I really need to work on so thanks for that advice.

What's an amount you'd recommend?

That depends on what stakes you're playing imo. The higher you go the better the opponents (in general) so winrates are lower / variance is higher. I need at least 50 to be comfortable personally but I started at 25nl with 20 and I was fine. I think at least 30 is fine through 50nl probably.

I used re-buy today and voodooed my mind into not obsessing over bankroll. It worked a little bit. Will keep at it.

Glad you tried auto-rebuy. Once you start the game, you should not look back at your bankroll and focus on beating the game. Check where you stand at the end of the session. I had a hard time getting in habit of doing this also. Many players don't do this because they think auto-rebuying is being careless of losing small number of blinds which will add up. But if you're a winning player and you're crushing the stakes, you'll maximize your winrate due to your stack, getting all the small tiny loses back.

I've mentioned this before but another reason for auto-rebuy is, it sucks so much if you got crippled one hand while not having auto-rebuy on, and then you're down to 15bb and you pick up AA pre-flop or some monster hand. Max you're gonna profit at best 30bb whereas if you had auto-rebuy on, you might've gotten paid 200bb of profit.

Also, do you have HEM/PT3? If so, you shouldn't even worry at all because they keep track of you anyways.

Oh, and there's another reason I forgot to add. If you ended up doubling up short-stack pos who sucked out on you but he's still playing while you have auto-rebuy on with full stack, you can get his whole stack, which allows you to get your money back + his initial stack.

Yes, I do have PT3. I've used it to keep track overall. What I'm seeing from this whole discussion is that I've been counting and watching my money while I play...and that it's not been good for my game. Played again today keeping myself from doing that and it's very liberating.

So I'm using auto-rebuy now. I appreciate all the good advice.

I wish I could avoid looking at my winnings/losses as I play. I know it's bad but that little flower on my Taskbar is so tempting
