Another free roll another freaking donk out
Well in the last 2 free rolls I have played in, its been donk city, I really thought by playing a private free roll I would not run into that many donks, guess I was very very wrong, got sucked out on one hand, made it back from 350 chips to 1800 chips, then I make an ok raise with a pair of queens, the guy or "donk" next to me puts me all in, ok hard to fold queens, idiot shows a pair of fives, as usual I have the best hand, asshole catches 4 spades on the board to make a flush and take me out of the tourney, I'm not mad cause of the flush as so much the guy went all in with fives and donks me out.
Think my brother is right, online poker is going to start hurting my live play, just last week, in one hour I saw 4 of a kind 2 times, 5 straights, 2 or 3 full boats and 4 out of 7 hands the player sucked out on the river, even my brother is just shaking his head, saying that is such bull shit, even his wife who is a very good poker player looks at me and says that is just bull shit, the odds are all messed up. Well the good news is I will be moving to reno and I will have a chance to play a lot of live tourneys, then I will report back to you guys and see if I am full of shit or if what me, my brother, his wife, etc. says is true. My money is on the fact my bro is right. Another thing I think that makes good sense is looking at online poker like a video game and not real poker, think there is some truth to that. Excuse the rant, maybe its just me but it just seems no matter how hard I try and not matter how many times I have the better hand, just seem to donk out over and over and over, getting pretty sickening, well you all game on and good luck, guess all I can do is keep trying and leave it at that. |

I made a big PF raise with QQ, guy calls me with 62 offsuit, flops 2 pair and thats all she wrote.
The CC freerolls are not worth the time, but the buyin ones are well worth the time. The play is quite good. |

That's free rolls, you should be happy that people call you with 55.
I don't understand why so many players complain when their opponents play bad, sure your gonna be angry when they get lucky, but why would you get mad because of someone calling you with a worse hand? |

Madness....Yes these are "donk" plays but dont let is adjust the way you are playing. The worst thing to do would be to play hands the way they would. Continue playing solidly and the law of large numbers will help swing the results in your favor.

WhItEmEtEo, excellent point, I will take your advice, if all fairness I cant change my game cause its the way my bro has been teaching me, hell anyone that has read a half decent poker book would not play like this, guess I am kind of lucky cause my bro is a semi pro and so I do not have the advantage of picking up bad habits, cause most of my training is coming from him, but I have a lot to learn, I saw that this weekend on a pokerstars game, I was down to 1000 chips and pissed, I let him play while I go tend to the bbq, I come back and not more than a beer later he is up to 10,000 chips LOL, so I do have a a lot to learn, but basic logic tells me that you don't take a chance of giving up half you chip stack on a pair of fives, but people do and people like me who are trying to play like a real poker player get knocked out, life has a sick sense of humor sometimes.

One thing about freerolls I don't ever see mentioned is the # of people who play them that really don’t care if the win or loose. They are just there filling in some time. Probably 2/3rds of the freerolls I play I know going in I won’t finish because I don’t have the time. I might have 20-30 minutes to kill maybe even an hour or 2. So I will experiment a lot and sometimes make plays that make no sense to just see if I am reading other players right.
The key is to recognize these types and adjust accordingly. Don't let them throw you off your game, make them play to you. If you have played a hand correctly and you loose... then you have done all you can do. Good luck. |

Ya, they are donks at the freerolls. I have ak suited and raise triple the big blind. He raises me all in and i think about it and call, thinking he has like pocket tens. Instead he has aj off. He wins the hand with trip jacks.
I wish you the best of luck to you in Reno. Good luck. |

donks, suckouts, and suckers
Hey I know how you feel I play a lot of freerolls and have been donked plenty of times. At the same time just last night I was playing against an opponent who was the table bully but not the sharpest tool in the shed. I had 60k he had like 160k. I had the best cards and doubled up through him. Very next hand I had A 3 offsuit, played it, (there were 4 or 5 sitting out) and got to see the flop. It was A 3 T. I checked he went all in and of course I called. I ended up getting a boat and taking 200k from the pot. As much as donks can hurt you they can help. Also getting for suits on the river sucks(literally) but even though your queens may be the best hand what is the percentage of 1 pair winning a game?? suck outs suck and people will keep getting them. It how we play after a bad beat that makes us better players.. congrads to the Reno move Peace

Excellent replies thank you all, and I think when I build the bank roll up, then I should try some of the buy in tourneys that CC is offering, but as you can see what is happening to me on the free rolls I am nervous cause in my pea brain I'm thinking well why waste 10 bucks if I am just going to get donked out. But I shall keep an open mind.

As the NUFC fan said its good news if other players call with worse hands. Sure they will get lucky at times but thats poker. If you were the only good player in a tournament, the chances of being donked out is very high but the long term statistics if you played the tournament would be very favorable. My % finish in freeroll tournaments is better than in buy-ins and I'm sure thats would be the case with most players. However, if these bad players effect your game overall then your right - don't play them.

The donks are in the freerolls and the point games. I'm fine when they call with bad cards but it just irks me when the river me which 98% of the time they will.
I still don't trust the cash games. That is putting my money in the system when it's like pulling the teeth to get US money in and out of the systems. Just my 2 cents (aka venting) |
