8th place!! I hit a new mile stone yesterday when I entered PS’s nightly $3.00 buyin with a 30K guaranteed prize pool. I finished 8th place out of a field of 3,688 and won $650.00 which obviously provided a nice boost to my bank roll. Everything (mostly) went right for me; my big pairs continuously held up and I played very well with only a few mistakes, and, of course, I also got lucky once or twice such as when I sucked out a set of tens on the river, and I won a lot of small pots that I normally wouldn’t have won because I think I have been playing too passive up till now. I reread Doyle Brunson’s Super system II’s section on NLHE and took his advice of very aggressive play. I still maintained my usual style of playing only the top 20-25 starting hands, changing only my betting style in order to put more pressure on those still in the hand. It seemed to make the difference because I usually get eliminated either just before or just after the money, because my chip stack is too small by then. I was really starting to get frustrated especially when I here/read about those who seem to always make it deep into tournaments. Now I finally have made the final table during a big tournment I want to be there alot more. What I would like to know is; does an aggressive betting style really make that much of a difference or did I just have a good night? As I said I still played fairly tight, I just picked up the aggression. Also where do you cross the line from being a good aggressive player to just being a reckless player who wins occasionally? I would appreciate any comments. By the way I was knocked out of the tournament when I paired both of my hole cards and then lost to a straight. I pushed the player all in on the flop and his straight hit on the river .

TAG? I am really a beginner at the strategy of Poker but it sounds to me like you are finding the way to play Tight/Aggressive, something I think we could all learn. TAG is what we all need to learn right? At least learn when and how to use it. BTW, Congrats! Great job. Last edited by Panamajoe : 8th April 2008 at 1:56 AM. Reason: forgot to congratulate Paw

Congrats on your score first off! The line for aggro/wreckless is a really fine line imo. I'm sure others will say differently, but it tends to be a fine one for me. Pretty much, play posistion. When you have cards in good posistion, dont hesitate to make a play on them. Make sure your betting is in good relation with the pot and your stack size. Dont bluff out of posistion, or even in posistion unless you have good reads on your opponent. Congrats on the score again, hope this post helps you out a little bit!

Congrats on 8th place! But more important congrats on learning more and improving your game. You noticed what didn't work before and what worked for you in this tournament. Keep it up and you'll continue to see your bankroll increase. Just don't make the mistake that some do when they win a nice sum of money - They blow it in higher stakes and higher buy-ins too fast.

If you haven't read Doyle's book he encourages very aggressive betting. He encourages this betting even with very marginal if not junk hands, just because most people will fold. I have watched him on television and I have never seen him play that loose like he describes in his book, but he does bets aggressively. It is not easy deciding when to big bet. I found myself hesitating because betting half or 3/4 or even my entire stack on a pair is a little intimidating especially when you want to get deep into the tourney. |

While Supersystems is a great book, his strategy you are referring to is not a good strategy to have in online poker. The reason for it working is two-fold, one he picks up a lot of pots because people know you are willing to go all in and play off their game, and two because people wont put you on a hand if you show down a couple all ins with only a gut shot as your chance. This does not work online because people dont pay enough attention and because people play so loose and reckless.
