| 8$ Into 10,000$ - Challenge As many of you have seen by now there are many poker players (Chris Ferguson, Daniel Negreanu, etc.) who have been doing this as of recently. That is turn a little bit of nothing into a lot of bit of something. I thought to myself if they can do it why can't a non-pro do the same thing if he put his mind to it. Now I am NOT a beginner so do not try this as your main source of income if you haven't been doing for while! But I am no pro either. Thus I am doing this as a statement that anyone can succeed at poker with just a little bit of patience, some skill and a little luck. My challenge? I will be turning 8$ into 10,000$ in TWO months time. Why 8$? 8$ is 200BB of the smallest stake on the site I will be playing (explained later) I will be implementing some similar rules as these pros but I will also be implementing some other rules to maximize profit some of which include multi-tabling among others. My intention is to make this an everyman challenge for the everyday person. Anyone can do this! The following are the rules I will be adhering to; 1. Site of Play - I will be playing my games at Reefer Poker. Now I know some of you are laughing. But my intention was to play at a smaller site in order to show two things. One - Some people don't have a choice in where they play especially if they aren't willing to invest money in poker. Two - I want to prove that you can succeed at playing no matter what site you play at, not just the lucrative ones. For what it is worth I was a coin flip away from choosing Cake Poker instead. 2. Types of Poker - I will only be allowed to play NLHE and PLO games. These are the two most common forms of poker that are played for real money and thus I will be sticking to those. Any other games will be prohibited. (I still love HORSE, Omaha 8 and Badugi) 3. Types of Games - I will be strictly playing Cash Games and SnG tournaments (Depending on my mood). MTT tournament will be for the most part prohibited except for special circumstance games such an extremely juicy money added tournament or a big guarantee tournament. 4. Promotions - Any promotions from the site that I unlock will be added to my grand total. Any promotions I may have unlocked before will not and all cash from that will be cashed out right away to keep from ruining my running tally. 5. Bankroll Management - I will be adhering to the standard bankroll management guide. For cash games I will need 500 BB to move up a level and if I fall below 250 BB then I will move down a level. For Sit n Go's I will need 50 buy-ins to move up a level. If I fall below 25 buy-ins then I will have to move down. For special MTT I will need 75 buy-ins to move up a level. If I fall below 50 buy-ins then I will move down a level. 6. Misc Cash Game Rules - Except for the beginning where I will be playing a short stack strategy the buy-in for cash games will be the maximum amount. If my stack at the table ever exceed 25% of my current bankroll I will be forced to leave when the blinds reach me. 7. Time Frame, Conditions and Prizes - I am trying to get this done faster then ever before so I have set a lofty goal for myself. I will be doing this in TWO months time. During this two months I will be living my life as always (I am a student) and doing my daily activities but I will be spending a substantial time playing poker. Also I will be cashing out periodically to simulate living expenses to make it harder on myself (this will be my discretion). If at the end of two months I have made it to 10,000$ bankroll then I will have completed my challenge and the prizes will be set as follows. 1,000$ will go to a charity of forum voters choices (I am blogging on several different forums) and I will be donating 1,500$ in poker bankrolls as I see fit. I don't know how I will award these yet but supporting my challenge and posting never hurts. And that is my challenge. If you have any thoughts or ideas I would love to hear them. I will be blogging my play and adventures on all forums (including this one) and sharing the things I learn as I go along. Good Luck on the felt, Tyler "CowboySquirrel" Horspool P.S. | Can you play the new depositors freerolls?- 14 days of $500 freerolls would help! If you can manage to qualify for the daily/ weekly freerolls and get a big cash in them, then I'd say its just about possible, but probably need some luck to get going/ avoid the suckouts early on. Best of luck anyway! |

| Good luck OP on your totally inovative challenge. I'm going to start a $9,999 to $10,000 challenge, because all of these other challenges have been beaten to death. I figure the advantage of the $9,999 to $10K challenge is I won't have to waste all that time playing morons at micro stakes. Instead I can spend that time earning my $9,999 at a real job with a different set of morons. I'll adhere to a strict bankroll management formula like brown bag lunches so I don't spend too much of my bankroll on lunch. I'll also siphon gas from my neighbor's car with a hose to cut down on gas expenses. I figure I can get to $9,999 in about 4 months. Sure the mortgage company is going to be pissed that I missed some payments. And the electric company is probably going to shut off my power. The cable company is going to take away my internet, but thank god for free wifi at Burger King. After I have my $9,999, the real challenge will begin. And that will be to find enough All Access Visa cards to purchase that total $9,999 so I can deposit. Then totally ignoring standard poker BRM, I will sit with my entire $9,999 bankroll at a $.01/$.02 NL table on Stars. Watch all the little donks go crazy as they try to pry away my hard earned money, and I just try to win a buck. With any success, I'll get to $10,000 quickly and the challenge will be complete. |

| Alright everyone. It is go time. The site is on eastern time. Most people like to go off of eastern time. I live in Pacific time but whatev. We shall use EST for this little dealio. 6th of May is the last day for me to get to my goal. It is a tough goal indeed as many have indicated but why call it a challenge if it is not really a challenge. Here is a screen shot of my account for proof. :-) ![]() Also just an information thing to everyone. I have to computers that I use. One has one screen (better for screen shots) and one with two screens (better for multi-tabling). I will changing between the two. I expect my next entry to be at the end of the day. Hopefully, telling you all how i miraculously made it to the next level of play without much effort and a lot of luck. Lastly, I am starting off short stacked (200 BB) so I will be playing a short-stack strategy to start. I will be playing exclusively at the .02/.04 tables for the better part of the day (starting now). |

I make the 2k you pay me 20k and if i don't I owe you 2k, since you are so positive this is impossible I want odds. Oh and I also want to see you sit at a table with 20k which you don't have. |

| re: 8$ Into 10,000$ - Challenge poker guess day 1 didnt go to well, waiting for an update on your progress. gl in your challenge. imo you need to get comp points to play in the daily 1k, weekly 10k, and the monthy 50k with out going broke, then i think it is possible for you. this adds up close to 7k ( if you score 1st place in all three ) in freeroll winnings ( and they are freerolls ) for the month ( that clears in one week). so for all you nonbelivers it is possible to do in one month with alot of play time Last edited by pokerjes : 7th March 2009 at 3:02 PM. |

| Day 1 Update Day 1 Update Sorry for the delay on the update folks. I was out late last night and didn't expect to wake up so late! But we are up, rested and ready for poker for the next two days straight. I am hoping they prove as fruitful as the first. Day 1 was a pretty good day as far as how far I got. I started off with 8$ and and played for most of the day with little gains. After a little sleep and some renewed initiative I put in some very good sessions and worked my way up to 17.07$. I'd say doubling your bankroll on the first day is probably a very good start. Right now the only games unlocked to me are .02/.04 NLHE Cash Games (there are 5 of them) and a .60 Buyin Sit N Go (Named the Fast Fifty). Here is my experience in both. The Fast Fifty (Sit N Go) - .50 + .10 Buyin - This tournament goes so fast that if you had all good players sitting at it, it would be so much more about luck then skill it would kill any kind of play. Fortunately, the players playing there are on the opposite end of the spectrum. With a little luck if you just sit back and wait for hands then maximize the profit (never hard with so many callers) then you should be able to make the money every time. Havana - .02/.04 NLHE - Again the players here are so soft that to beat the game you just have to wait for a hand and then when you get one make sure you get the most value you can. It is not uncommon to triple or quadruple up at these tables as you will usually find more then a few calling stations. Daily Lesson: Value Betting A sometimes overlooked part of poker value betting is very integral to a good players game. Value betting isn't about betting the most when you've got it or even just maximizing your wins. It's about betting the 'amount' with the hands you have with the board you have and most importantly your opponent and your opponents hand. For instance if you have 2 3 and the flop comes A Q 7 rainbow and you know your opponent isn't going to fold most of the time and has A A, then you are not going to bet. Even though it is a duhr that you shouldn't bet the 2 3 into the A A for most you just have to realize that you stand nothing to gain from making any x amount of bet. Same thing with A A with the A Q 7 rainbow and your opponent has 2 3 but you know he's not likely to call but there is a good chance he likes to bluff. There is no value in betting here and you serve better to your value to check this flop in hopes that he bluffs since there is no card that can help him. Of course these are two extreme cases and aren't likely to happen but you should surely learn to maximize the value of your bets i.e. Bet a lot when you have the better of two great hands, bet to stall your opponent or check on a draw, fold bad hands or hands you stand nothing to gain, etc. Overall, I am hoping that day 2 is just as fruitful as day 1 and that I can at the least move up in stakes by Monday. I have done the math and I will have to move up in stakes once every 6.6667 days to reach my goal and it would be best to beat that date the first time since some of the time I will most undoubtedly have less time to play then others. |

| Good luck to you OP. You ask for suggestions, so I thought I'd throw in a couple. 1. It doesn't look to me like "Reefer" has enough tables in play for you to reach your goal. You might want to add another site once you get a bit more in your Bank Roll. IMO, you will have to play more than 6 tables at a time. 2. Get some video of your play thru this because if you actually do it, it will be pretty big and I for one would love to see some video. Someone mentioned a "Prop" bet. I'm not being negative, so don't take this the wrong way. I will match any amount over the $10K and contribute it to the Charity chosen by the board. (ie-If you get to $12000, I'll donate $2000) Good Luck |

| Day 2 Update Well day 2 ended about an hour ago and after a break I have decided to blog and then get back into the fray. Day 2 went just as well as Day 1 if not better. These .02 / .04 games are so soft it is unbelievable. Not that I haven't had any shortage of luck on my side. I played about 1.5k hands today and in that I got aces once which is weird because yesterday I got aces 4 times. Just a weird observation. Anywho on to what actually happened: Session 1 - 4:01pm - 5:30pm Session 1 was pretty mediocre for the most part. I stayed about even at the 17$ mark for about an hour until I pushed in the end to about 20$. The action was slower then usual (perhaps better players playing). In the end my wireless router went out and I deemed it a sign that I should stop that session for the day. I multi-tabled .02 / .04 Havanna Tables the entire time. One interesting story from this blog is that I get a lot of people asking me why I am playing such low stakes compared to before. One such person claimed to have played with me often at higher stakes and we had a long chat which turned out interesting. In the end I put on a real hurting of a beating on her (almost felt bad .... almost....) which you can see on hand #1 of my favorite hands from day 2. Session 2 - 10:00pm - 12:00am (o.k. so my session went a bit over but I will still put it as day 2) Session 2 was very very streaky. I was on my dual screen computer which allowed me to play more then four tables. At this point since I am legally by my bankroll status able to play .02 / .04 comfortably I upped my buy-in to 1$ instead of the .50 cents I was buying with. Usually I buy-in for max but only when single or double tabling. When the number of tables reaches three or four then I have to lower the buy-in to keep my bankroll safer. Anywho, the added buy-in turned out to pay dividens right away as all of my double ups were up to 2$ instead of 1$ and so forth. The tables (except for one staunch table that I was receiving beats in) were running very hot. I ran up to 7 tables at one time (five .02 / .04 tables and two .60 Sit n Gos). I lost both Sit N Gos without winning any hands basically. One cash game was running slow and I kept getting bad beat in. The other four tables seemed to be going too good to be true but in the end it wasn't a dream and I ended each table above 3$ (two had over 7$ when I finished). I won my biggest pot yet at this stage which was for 4.32$. A very very good session. Overall, I started the day at 17.07$ and ended the day at 34.30$. I doubled my bankroll for the second day in a row (I don't expect the trend to continue). I am ahead of schedule as far as jumping limits goes but I fully expected the first one to be that way. I expect to jump up to .05 / .10 tables sometime tomorrow when I reach the 500 BB necessary (50$ required). Here is a screenshot at the end of the day. ![]() |

| Well, this challenge is definitely not something I would have the patience to do. You on the other hand--- You can do it. It'll take a lot of patience and skill, But i think it can be done. As for your best friend thinking her hands are best - she's probably right. |

| i can guarantee you're not going to be able to do this, but it's admirable that you're trying i suspect that this will end the way that all these threads seem to end, with the poster disappearing after a few updates when things start to go sour. poker seems like an easy game until you're running bad gl though, i hope you make some money |

| re: 8$ Into 10,000$ - Challenge poker I am now going to have a Q & A / Factoid section in the second part of my updates / blog here. This is to field questions and maybe just respond to some of the readers. If you have any questions I will answer any and all of them. Q & A / Factoid Section Q: Do you really think you can make it? A: I do believe in myself to complete this challenge. I believe I have the skills necessary as well as the time and patience to pull this off. If I didn't I would have set the bar lower. Now would I be surprised if I didn't pull this off. Not in the slightest. I set the bar in such a way that it was very difficult to pull off. Thus the term "challenge". Q: What is your motivation for doing such a challenge? A: I want to show the world that anybody can fulfill their dreams. I know it is corny but really that is my main ambition in trying my hand at this. Q: Can you play the new depositor freerolls? No, I cannot. These freerolls are for new depositors and I, unfortunatley, am an old depositor. But, I expect that people who were then new depositors would have an advantage over me. Q: Good motivation, I just don't think this will be possible in 2 months. If it were even close, I would just keep my mouth shut....didn't it take Chris Ferguson, a pro player, like a year? I appreciate all comments even ones like this one. Chris Ferguson took 15 months to complete his challenge which was start from 0$ and reach 10,000$. And while it is debatable that C. Ferg is a much better player then me there are many advantages I have over him in this challenge. One, was that he started from 0 and and worked his way up while I started from 8$. Another is that he took 7 months just to stabilize his bankroll at 6.50$ while I have already far surpassed that mark and my bankroll is stable. Another advantage is that C. Ferg only had so much time to play between his pro activities and while I have obligations as well (school, family, friends) I do have considerably more time to spend on this adventure. The only two advantages I can think that he had over me are experience and the benefit of a larger site. Q: You are not going to make it.... how about a prop bet? A: I am still debating taking prop bets at this time. I will let you know in the next couple days for sure. I just know I am going to get a lot of action if I start prop bets. Q: Will you switch sites to play more tables? A: I am not planning to do so at this time but it is something I will consider in the near future if I stand to gain a lot. My reasoning is that not everyone has the luxury of switching sites like that (I know from past experience) Q: Will you do some video? A: I will be trying to set this up when I reach some of the bigger tables. Probably some time next week. I would do it sooner but I have to set up a mic and I have to go digging Q: What else are you planning to do with this challenge? A: I am going to start opening up this blog to more places. Right now I am blogging on three forums and some blogging spots that aren't really all that popular. I am going to open up to more forums probably including big ones like 2 + 2 and Rounders Radio. Hopefully by tomorrow. ------------------------------------- Favorite Hands of Day 2 1. Yours Truly 2 Outer - Bad Beat against a friend I really don't know what prompted me to think she was screwing with me but this is once instance where I made a really bad read but got paid off anyway. The only reason I had made this call was because I saw her make some incredible bluffs earlier which set me up for this. You hate to see this happen as a skill player but I couldn't mind the extra 4$ could I? She was really cool about it since she seemed to like me so much. Correction - Bigger Pot I have to correct an earlier statement that the biggest pot I made was in the 4 - 5$ range since I foudn two instances where the pot was bigger then that. My actual largest pot of the day was 7.43$. This one though is the second biggest pot of the day clocking in at 6.56$. It really shows how much hands like suited connectors and low pocket pairs can win big when hit. It also shows how you should bet a lot more if you want to protect your hadn preflop and not overplay your hand afterwards like some animal that lives in an aquarium setting.
