| 3 OUT OF 4 I played at a home game last weekend. Dealers choice. Mostly Stud but also some Guts and Jacks or better. The stud was a joke. Seven handed to the river every hand. They laughed at me for folding before the 2nd round of betting. "How do you know what kind of hand you'll get if you dont see at least 6 cards?". But there was one game I actually liked. It's called 3 out of 4. Each player is dealt one down card and one up card, (door?) for the the 1st round of betting. Then a 2nd round of betting after another up card and a final round of betting after a 4th card. On the 4th card you have the option of having it dealt either up or down. If you chose down you must expose your hole card. Again, they made sport of me for taking it up every time thus keeping my hole card concealed. In their opinion, the only time you should take it up is if your hiding a made hand. Trips beats a str8 beats a flush. This made absolutely no sense at all to me. If someone is willing to bet to 4th street, I'm assuming they have a strong hand already. Why would anyone reveal their busted draw and think that I'm going be scared of a random 4th card. But none the less, I was able to win a big pot when both my opponents turned up their rag hole cards against my concealed flush. It got me thinking though. I'm not sure when it would ever be preferable to take the last card down. It has no bearing at all on the strength of your hand. All 4 cards are accessable either way. Any thoughts on this? |
