3 blinds in before the cards are dealt?

I've been meaning to ask the question for awhile, because I've never heard of it before.

The way that I've been playing online, at the casino, and at Side Pockets, is when a player who was in the BB gets eliminated that hand, then the following hand, there would just be one BB and no SB, right? I just want to clarify that that is what it's suppose to be. Is there another way to do it? Or is this just stupid? ----

On Monday nights, I go to another bar to play poker, because the bar puts in $2 per person for the winner to take home (ex. if 40 people are in the tourney, the winner would take home $80).

Well, what they do, is when a player is eliminated on the BB, the following hand would have two BB's.. the next two people would both have to post their BB's, and then the hand after that, It would be Small, Small, Big... with two posting SB's, and one posting the BB... the following hand would then go back to normal, but a player would be skipped being on the button. This is the only place that I have heard ever doing this. When I asked a couple of people in the tourney about this, and the person who runs the tournament, they said, "Oh, it's standard rules, they do it at the casinos," and then I explain to them that Harrah's at least does not, and they just brush it off. To me, I think the way they do it is dumb.. but whatever.

Can anyone tell me if this is really standard or if it's not, has anyone else played like this before?

Normally a 'dead button' is used

However in the example you gave a 'moving button' is being used.

A couple of casinos in Spokane do this. What it amounts to is moving the button ahead to the first available player but without allowing the button or SB to skip ahead and miss a blind. So it's button, SB, BB at a minimum, then the button or SB might have to add in more to move up to the blind they would have been if the player hadn't been eliminated.

The link posted above shows how it works when one person gets eliminated. You can also lose two in the same hand and it gets even more confusing.

It kind of makes sense in a weird way but personally I'd only suggest doing it in a casino where a dealer can keep everything straight.

The shorthand I use is this - If you're two after the dealer you're BB always. If you're first after, or you are dealer but haven't posted BB yet in that round you're BB. If you posted BB in the last hand you're SB. Make sense?

Yep a local poker room uses the moving button where I am at. I prefer the dead button myself but its their rules.

Wow - they sure picked the most convoluted way to do it.

Dead button / blind is by far the best way to do it as far as I'm concerned. Hell of a lot easier to understand too. You always move the big blind to the next player, and the small blind / button tail along behind it. If either the button or the small blind fall to a seat that's just been vacated, then it's a dead button / blind.

Only way you can screw that up is if you insist on thinking in terms of moving the button rather than the big blind.

I am still a little confused. I have seen the BB go out then the next person to them is SB with the BB one more spot over. Not two BB's. Or there is just one BB with no SB. Does that mean you can play any of these? Or does it even matter as long as everyone knows.

I didn't quite follow that first scenario. Are you saying it was BB then SB then BB? I don't think that can happen unless someone screwed up.

Could you be thinking about someone posting? In some situations if a player comes in late or if it's a cash game they may have to post the blinds from a middle position.

It maybe be standard for them, but i don't know based on which rules ...

For me, dead button is also the standard.

I suppose it is different where you play. The leauge I played in and most every tournament would use a dead blind. So for example the big blind got knocked out and the button moved and the guy who would have been in the small blind is now gone (empty seat, was bb and just got knocked out) there would be no sb, the bb would still post however. This would be the only way it would work, the BB would get moved to the next player in line, dealer button ect.

I'm sure this is how I remember this being played out each time. I happens and I ussually don't even pay that much attention to it.

I didn't like this, though, on the other hand.. it was easier and more profitable to steal the blinds. Sucks when you were one of those blinds.

That's how I had always played in other bar tourneys, online, and at the casino.
