WPT BootCamp changed my game...but...

Hi Guys,
I completed a WPT BootCamp on tournament play in Sept. Prior to going to the camp, my play could definately be classified as timid/aggressive. I NEVER tried to take down pots when I had garbage hands, even when I was in position. So, off I go to a WPT BootCam and my game changes from weak to more aggressive. Fine. You'd think I had the winning formula for winning tournaments. WRONG. I do amass a much larger stack during the easrly and mid game portion of the game, thru being aggressive, but then I find either of two things occur: I fall out near the money because I'm too aggressive and other hands beat mine, of I revert back to my timid play. the result in either case iss the same. I fall out before the money. any ideas why I sabotague myself, so close to the $$? Any ideas are appreciated! also, I'm attending anotherr WPT BootCamp on tournament play, in Dec, if knowledge of that changes your advice?
Jane

Late in MTTs is all about small pots. Sounds like you either get too involved with marginal hands or that you just tighten up too much.

Open raising with less than premium hands is fine, but don't get in over your head with them.

Your info is a little general...maybe you could post some example hands where you think you made mistakes?

Thanks, Chuck,
Sure, I'll open an unraised pot...get a call, make a continuation bet...and get called. I'l have 2nd best hand and lose w/it...Or, I'll have what is the best hand...push it like mad, and get rivered. It seems that people will call witrh odd hands, as long as they have an A. My bets post flop and after the turn are wither pot sized or very close...so whyy do they stay? I'm now seeing that I do make the continuation bet if there are 2 of the same suit on the flop. HOWEVER, why would a crappy flush possibility like 4-2 suited be a hand with which to call a 3x BB bet? Its calls with nothig hands that kill me. Should I STOP and not make a continuation bet if the flop is coordinateed? I still have a tendancy only to raise witth hands that are good (9-9 and better, A-face, Ace-face suited) I don't know if I gave you enuf info, here, but if not, let me know and i'll keep going.
thanks a lot!

If you are going to make a continuation bet it is all about the texture of the flop. With a mid pocket pair for instance a bet is not going to be smart if the flop has three overcards of the same suit (dramatic example). However, if there is one overcard, say a king, then a continuation bet is worth a shot, as it is very possible you have the best hand.

With overcards that miss, you have to watch as if you are holding KQ, open for a raise, get a call and then c-bet a 468 flop, your opponent probably recognises the flop missed you and will call, hoping to take the pot away.

Also, watch for aces as so many people will call raises with ace rag that a flop with an ace on it when you don't have an ace usually spells trouble.

Another point is to watch how many opponents are in the hand when you c-bet as the more in the hand, the more likely it is someone has hit.

Quick point as well, be prepared to fire another bullet. It really is surprising how many people call on the flop and then will give it up on the turn. Just a few things to look out for.

Thanks, Melcor,
Don't you wish there was a poker competency test administered before every game?

Hi!
I wish I'd won it; I paid for it, outright. At least I got a price break by being an alumna of a previous bootcamp.

Hey Jane, I too am amazed at the amount of players that will call a preflop bet with two low suited cards. I also get caught with trips or two pair on the flop, I will bet and no matter how much I bet they will chase their low flush, catching on the river.

Ian, neither the myspace link, nor the link to the other cardschatters link enables me to see anything.I get an error message saying I don't have permission to access that page. Odd. So I'll have to answer your question, without the opportunity to meet that other member until the site lets me thru. Does anyone know why I wouldn't have the authority to see a post from another member?
Anyway, how I found myself at the 1st bootcamp? I'm on their email list and knew I would be in the area where the camp was, when they were hosting it. All other camps and WSOP Academies were at inconvenient times and places for me. I was finally free to be where they were, when they were there. Luckily for me. I'm proud for you that you won that prize package. I've been to Nassau before; it's not very safe to walk around alone or with just your wife, so make sure several of you go off the grounds when travelling outside the Wyndham. Maybe you and your wife can go with my boyfriend and me, to Atlantis (great casino where the PokerStars Carribean Adventure is played)so we'll have safety in numbers? Just a thought.

NO!

Ian directed you to a link in the forbidden secret sanctum of the approximately insane, where he swore an oath not to talk about the fight club.

Sorry i should have checked before i linked

basically the boot camps are great and with several pros there and really enjoyable and helpful.

The likes of Annie Duke, Mark Seif and Andy Block all teaching their own speciality in Razz.
With games played as well against them

but to original topic and you saying your continuation bets being called. What levels are you playing at because at high levels, a check by the preflop raiser is usually scarier then a cbet. Also you need to know when to c bet, a low flop you can represent a pair, You can represent a king or an ace on flop. But on a j,t,8 flop, if you c bet, The best you will probably be put on is a,j (at best) so you wil lbe called more. Generally a jack high board is hard to bluff at since pre flop callers have a high chance of having a jack for some reason
