Why you shouldn't listen to a "champion"

Okay, now I knew all along this was wrong, but some newbies to this league I played in pre-injury lapped up this incorrect advice. This guy, a 'I know more about poker than anyone' type would tell people that a person with an As Kh had a better hand than a player with Ac Kd. He would justify this by commenting that the Ace was an Ace of Spades, and a higher suit. In Hold 'Em, SUITS DO NOT MATTER, because no suit trumps another. But this guy claimed to know more than anyone because he was in a WSOP tourney, because he won a seat in a Poker Stars satellite. He has named himself a "champion" because of it. Yes, playing the WSOP is a great accomplishment, something I've never done, but it does not make someone a poker afficiando; maybe in his own mind.

He's wrong. Ac Kd is better.

Suits are ranked but only for the start of a game to determine the button when dealing high card. If I have the A♠ and you have A♣, then I get the button

Pocket Jokers own AcKd.

Yeah, but suited Aces owns Pocket Jokers.

But if my suit matches my aces' suit then i own your aces.

What happened to first Ace gets the deal?

Nah, it's by suit. At least that's how Paradise does it. Spades really do own.

Most home games use this.
Some casinos use it too.
But technically, it goes by suit.

If this person can get into the WSOP, maybe it's not such a big accomplishment after all.

In home games, often it's something like first Ace. Or Red Jack, or One-Eyed Jack, or whatever - that's then dealing cards round until someone gets the required card. The way most sites do it is each person is dealt a single card, and the highest one (with suits ranked alphabetically - Clubs lowest, then Diamonds, Hearts and Spades top) getting the deal.

Unless the 'pro' was a complete idiot (or too used to his home games), my best guess is that your memory of the example could be slightly off, because there is one useful piece of advice which would show one AK unsuited as better than another, which is with something like As Kh vs Ac Ks, when the As Kh WOULD have a slight advantage. The reason for this is that (assuming no other hands in play) if 4 spades or 4 hearts hit, then the As Kh would win, whereas the Ac Ks would only win with 4 clubs, because the As dominates the Ks in that suit, so for comparing flush potentials, then 2 unsuited cards of equal ranks against each other can have different chances of winning rather than splitting.

Yep. It goes by suit to determine who gets the button if two or more players get the same card. I think the suit ranking, from first to last is either:

Spades
Diamonds
Hearts
Clubs

or
Spades
Hearts
Diamonds
Clubs

I know the spades is the best and clubs is last. Usually when a player gets the Ace of Spades, the dealing of one card stops becuase nothing beats it and the button goes to the player.

unless one of the aces in the event of 2 AKs is the same suit as the oponants K then it is better as they have a slight advantage if that suite can make a flush
