Why do people sit out?

This thread is to pose the question not start a name calling thread that noone will appreciate. Why do you sit? Is it to wait out the "noobs"? Do you sit to assess the betting patterns of the other players at your table? I have wondered about this and would like to hear what anyone else thinks.

I for one hate people sitting out, unless it's an emergency, like a potty break. Why join a tournament if you're just gonna do that. I for one thing, don't sit out. I think People do that just to place higher and if it's for real money they try to make the payline. To me this is cheating. It disrupts the other players and the game. Sites know about this problem but they do very little.

Sit outs are annoying, and usually the get blinded and anted out if a lot of people are playing. Some people just leave and sit out.

Once I was heads-up with a sit out and he still had close to 7000 chips left, and had to wait until the blinds took him out. Very frustrating.

WELL! Most times there are legitimate reasons, in tournaments when the registration started days or weeks before alot of people plain forget. Now there are some savy tournament players who will sit out the first few blind levels because they won't play any of those hands anyway. There are some who are probably sitting in front of their screen getting a feel for the game, and letting the craziness calm down. In the end its their money and if they have the right to play whatever strategy they think is best. Sit outs shouldn't really bother you there are ways to use them to your advantage especially if you have 1 or 2 sitting to your left, lots of stolen blinds will go your way. Besides next time you have a bunch of chips close to the money and take a bad beat you will think about trying to sit out for awhile

altough it is annoying as hell, poker sites cant do anything about it, it is not cheating, sitting out is the same as just folding every hand which is in no way cheating, if a person has paid for a tourny they have the right to play anyway they see fit as long as its in the rules

I sit out sometimes for strategic reasons, when I am sitting with a big big stack and there is a frenzy going on with desperate allins from people trying to survive. I will sit out and watch for primo opportunites and then enter a hand. I also will return briefly to play my blinds. Also it can be very advantageous for people to think you are not there, they tend to get careless. Like make a big bet trying to steal your blind and lo and behold your not really sitting out and you just happen to be sitting there with AA in the big blind..aahh it's delicious..

5 out of out sitting

I call this one, someone must be hatching some eggs with all this sitting there are doing.

No one there, they got into the tournament and letting everyone else bet as they move up the latter trying to get into the money. I works a lot to ;(

You should have to make somekind of computer click on every two hands, or you always get the BB.

Would stop this mess!

IK believe people sitout when they have to go pee or they cannot play anymore,

Or they have to go out, or they arent online and forgot about the touyrney.

I dont see why everyone wines about sitoutters there no threat and all they give you is free chips from there blinds,

So dont complain and just play.

Sitoutters are actually an advantage, but not when 8 out of 10 people are sitting out.

When you know they are not there all you have to do is make a minimum bet & they are automatically folded. I never complain about sit-outs....just take advantage of it with smallest possible bet....but be careful, if they are just lurking they could be just waiting for you to make big bet (or all-in bet) and bust you with a monster like A A or K K

It is sometimes terrible and i don't like the people which sit-out to rach a better position.

If it's strategy ok , but some they have some dollars left and hope to finish on 300 or 400 ... ( WHAT IT CHANGE ??? )

a lot of people choose to sit out after generating a decent sized stack as to try and make the cut for money. i can sort of rationalize this. i think if i ever did this it would be to keep me from playing junk hands

Prevention

Sure, people use sitting out as a strategy, but with more and more freerolls coming up, people enter into ones weeks in advance and cant even remember if there still is one. Its quite annoying as with 1500 chips in a normal freeroll, most people sitting out the whole time clear out just around the first break, there should be a message when the freeroll starts that you have to click a "yes im here" button to confirm. This would make sure all the people in the tourney are actually there. Some forums are opening registration only an hour in advance so that the people regestering are actually there.

Sitting out reply

At PokerStars they allow people to sit out because they say that in a really tourney people are allowed to sit out, because when you enter you play a certain amount for the chips you get, so therefore you can do what you want with the chips. I don't think it is fair, but oh well.

well, i have not played for much money online, but i have played a few play money tournies where people sit out (dont know if thats the same thing but thats my experience)

but nothing wrong with sitting out, i mean, sure its annoying, but nothing unfair about it.
like suppose that person was there, and they just folded every hand, thats all they do by sitting out.

the problem is, most people who dont sit out are just as stupid. They will battle it out so hard and force the other people all-in.

i've been on tables where some1 was sitting out, and the rest of us just took turns eating their blinds until he was out. Then we played against each other.

if your that annoyed by people sitting out, dont let them place near top, and they will stop doing it. If there is no harm done by sitting out, people will continue doing it. I've been in 27 people play money tournaments where people who sat out placed in money. Its almost guaranteed placing, so why play and try, when you can just sit out and do almost as well (but like i said above, this is play money =p)

I actually hate when people sit out... Especially in freerolls. I once was on a freeroll where there were 7 sitters at my table. So we were 2 guys playing against those 7 sitters.. You can't fold a hand in this situation or your opponent will gather the blinds every hand. It's very annoying. But I guess we can't do anything against it.

Wow ! it's great to see so many different views! I have been frustrated by sitters but I also see the benefits. To the people who sit out and watch: Could you do that in a real casino? If a person is folding every hand, I can see them there; online, you cannot. That is the real annoying part for me. Does that mean I could go in to a casino and just leave my chips at the table? Just wondering... Online poker still has a way to go to make me want to spend my real money on Pokerstars, or any other site. Is playing in tournies about beating everyone else by any means allowed? I must be silly to think this was a game of skill and recognizing others actions? not just getting by to get a small piece of the pie by not really playing everyone in the field? Maybe I'm still tilting from my last bad beat

I almost always sit out for 30mns-1h in free rolls i guess partly to outlast the retards and to keep me from getting impatient early, i always seem to play better when i come in late....its not a matter of losing chips early because there really isnt much to losein blinds...

hrmmm

i personally only use the "sit out" for potty breaks like said before but i can understand why some ppl sit out becuz they're low stacked and scared they'll lose if they don't get there cards or if someone calls their "all in". soooo i just let them do what they do ...it's not me and i usually see ppl that sit out, LOSE anyways! my mom says on pokerstars if you don't get your cards for awhile she'll sit out and let the cards reconfigure from being delt less players and she'll get better cards after coming back in after a couple hands, sat out, or so she tell me. hrm...

well, for all you that think sitting out should be considered cheating and sites should do more to stop this, I found a good article on pokerstars....it fully explains why people sitting out can actually help you in the tournies...

nothing wrong with it (even if annoying)

its like basically if they were there and fold every hand

if the remaining players cannot take advantage of a guy losing every hand, thats just sad

if i am in a 9 people tourny where final 3 place in money, are 4 people are left, and one sits out, i usually make a deal with the other people to take turn taking blinds. So that person wont place in money.

Problem is most people are stupid and play so aggressive, that eventually you'll get A-A vs K-K and the guy sitting out will end up in final 3. You want to stop ppl sitting out? Stop letting them place in money

ALthough i can see how people are annoyed with players who sit out
most of the time i have found the players just had to go the bathroom really bad or had somethign else to do..
And yes sometimes players do it to wait for people to get out but it would still be the same as teh player playing and folding every hand..i dont mind it

I only play real money games, so I don't see this happening often, but if I sit out, its to go get a drink, or use the bathroom.

Most people just want to do better.. or get through the first hour of all in mania. So they sit out. I usually just fold my hands because I do not want to risk my chips on that.

Sitting out

In pokerroom.com sit&gos they can sit out the whole time & get to the final three seats for payout. Other than that if the blinds catch up with you sitting out is useless to me. You dont need to see how other people play if you have the best hand.

once I was in a sit & go free game on Ultimate Bet and the other people were telling me to sit out because if every body sits out we will just rack up hours at the tables which I guess earns you points that you can then turn into real $ at the real money tables. People will always find some way to take advantage.

all of you think that people who sit out lose but thats totally false...in free rolls especially if you sit out from the beginning for the first 30 minutes to an hour you will come back and more than half the people in tourney will be eliminated and you will have not lost a lot of chips because the blinds are very low at the start. That is the only time i intentionally sit out but there are other times when i sit out because i have to go do something and what am i supposed to do? Give my money away? Thats dumb I hope for the opportunity to return and honestly compete to win! Sitting out is a great feature and i dont think the majority of people who do it on pokerstars are playing multi accounts althought yes a few likely are...that is actually a good idea being as how i have two computers in my house...havent even thought of that... lol especially for free rolls! You are a genius i tell you!
