Why do I always pull a DAgostino/Black at the final table of a MTT?
Last night was a perfect example of the biggest leak in my game.
In MTT's, I do pretty well. If I don't get sucked out on by the time blinds start escalating, I really turn it on. Every FT I've made, I've had a huge chip lead [or been a close 2nd/3rd] and complete command of the tables leading up to it. Last night I made it to the FT of a MTT with more than 2x 2nd place's chipstack and (even after telling myself over and over to slow down and treat it like a SnG) I still went out 5th. :/ |

Bad timing like this:
POKERSTARS GAME #6091838474: TOURNAMENT #30857625, $4.00+$0.40 HOLD'EM NO LIMIT - LEVEL XIII (1000/2000) - 2006/08/29 - 01:58:15 (ET) Table '30857625 17' 9-max Seat #6 is the button Seat 3: joosebucklol (73740 in chips) Seat 4: bigwats666 (9702 in chips) Seat 5: PRL100 (58414 in chips) Seat 6: reefgossip (45951 in chips) Seat 7: BohRing (63521 in chips) Seat 8: tex2ak (18672 in chips) joosebucklol: posts the ante 100 bigwats666: posts the ante 100 PRL100: posts the ante 100 reefgossip: posts the ante 100 BohRing: posts the ante 100 tex2ak: posts the ante 100 BohRing: posts small blind 1000 tex2ak: posts big blind 2000 *** HOLE CARDS *** Dealt to joosebucklol [Jh Ks] joosebucklol: raises 8000 to 10000 bigwats666: folds PRL100: folds reefgossip: folds BohRing: folds tex2ak: raises 8572 to 18572 and is all-in joosebucklol: calls 8572 joosebucklol said, "gl" *** FLOP *** [8d 6s 6h] *** TURN *** [8d 6s 6h] 2♣ *** RIVER *** [8d 6s 6h 2c] 4♥ *** SHOW DOWN *** tex2ak: shows [Th Td] (two pair, Tens and Sixes) joosebucklol: shows [Jh Ks] (a pair of Sixes) tex2ak said, "ty" tex2ak collected 38744 from pot *** SUMMARY *** Total pot 38744 | Rake 0 Board [8d 6s 6h 2c 4h] Seat 3: joosebucklol showed [Jh Ks] and lost with a pair of Sixes Seat 4: bigwats666 folded before Flop (didn't bet) Seat 5: PRL100 folded before Flop (didn't bet) Seat 6: reefgossip (button) folded before Flop (didn't bet) Seat 7: BohRing (small blind) folded before Flop Seat 8: tex2ak (big blind) showed [Th Td] and won (38744) with two pair, Tens and Sixes I just had command over the table and pros like Negraneau say to not stop if you have momentum. I know KJo isn't a good hand, believe me, but people were FOLDING to me (instead of checking their option). I had this on lock for so long. |

If the table's submitting to you and you're dominating, I don't see anything wrong with this play. The thing you have to keep in mind is that regardless how passive a table is, they can still pick up a hand (like in the above example), so controlled aggression is important. But again, I don't see anything wrong with this hand considering you say that the table is playing pretty tight.
I wouldn't mind taking a look at your HHs if you were to post or send them if you want them analyzed. I'm curious, plus a different perspective can always help. Last edited by ChuckTs : 30-08-2006 at 6:27 AM. |

Thing is, you have the big stack and don't need to play that aggressively. You need aggression if you're short stacked but your M here is over 20. (Guess who's just been reading HoH Vol 2?
) You still have the full range of plays available to you, and KJ just doesn't win that many hands. You can play it in late position, but under the gun there's too much risk that someone will move all-in with a pocket pair or an ace, especially if they're short stacked, and you're committing a large chunk of your stack as the underdog. For me this hand is a fold or a limp at best. Also it doesn't help if you have an aggressive table image. |

A couple of thoughts about this hand. Like everyone said including the thread started KJ off suit is pretty dangerous, if anyone calls or raises here you are either a coin flip (slight underdog) to any underpair or big underdog to a big ace (AK, AQ, AJ), or big underdog to any pockets jacks or better, so there isn't much of an upside to this hand except for stealing the blinds. It also looks like your table image is pretty aggressive so good players are probably waiting for a pair or any ace to play back at you knowing they will probably be the favorite. I'm not saying you should fold here preflop but you were first to act, and way out of position so a fold would certainly not be a bad play at all. But a more reasonable bet of about 5000 would have been a better play. It would still chase away the weak hands but still give you room to get out if someone pushes (remember if someone does push back there is a very strong chance you are behind here). If you had of bet 5000 and villan reraises you all in, your pot odds are less and you have less invested and it's an easy fold. With the bet you made you gave yourself the pot odds which made your call madatory. The smaller initial bet would have saved you 13K. Remember you had everyone yet to act in the hand, it's not unreasonable for someone to wake up with a hand. Aggression is certainly important in this game, but people to often forget the first word in the phrase "controlled". But personally I wouldn't play a hand from under the gun at a final table if I wasn't willing to put all my chips at risk in the hand. Are you willing to do that with K J off suit? So, if you want me to anylize your play from one hand (and who wouldn't ,lol) I would say you are not considering position enough in your plays and stay aggresive but remember the other word usually put with aggression which is CONTROLLED aggression. Also, with the blinds big, and at the final stages of a MTT where most of the fish and donks are gone smaller bets can acomplish the same thing with less risk than larger bets. Just my 2 cents. And remember I am saying this on the base of just one hand so don't get mad at me.

I appreciate the observation & suggestion. I posted the whole tourney's [key] hand history on another thread here:
