Who can help me on Harrington vol 1?

Hi, i just had a question on a problem on part 4 of Harrington's book, its about pot odds and hand analysis,
can i post it or is it a copyright infringement?
If someone has read the book before can you send me a msg?

Edit: Just opened my book and my bookmark was in section 4. It wasn't hand 4-4 was it, because that'd be quite a coincidence.

Ok, lemme read it and I'll post in a little bit.

You can't post the entire book on CC. but you can post a problem or too and not worry about copyright stuff.

Harrington says that if he has a bigger pair, you will still win 10 out of 54. That's about the odds of you making your set to beat his pair, without him making something bigger.

That is, if he has K/K, you'll still win the hand (most likely with a 5 on the board) about 10 out of 54 times.


As for the problem and figuring it out...

Someone limps for $100.
You have $2,100 and call with 5/5.
The SB shoves the rest of his stack in ($550 total).
It's folded back to you.

$850 pot, $450 to call.

First off, Harrington tries to put him on a range of possible hands. In this case he figures Q/J+ if the guy is tight.
Winning those 10 out of 54 overpairs, and 52 of the 96 unpaired hands he could have means that you'll have 62 winners for every 88 losers.

That gives you odds to call.

It's an interesting question because you only flop a set about one in 8 times according to most authors. And you have to hit your set when he doesnt hit his set with a higher pair.

But I'm sure he has one of those funky machines like pokerstove that can also calculate the number of times you will also hit a fluke straight or flush as well.

you hit a set 1/8 on the flop, but you have an almost 1/5 chance of hitting a set by the river. in a situation where all the money is in preflop, you do not look at just the chance to hit on the flop, but on later streets too.

and yes, you can use pokerstove in this case to give you mostly accurate results about your expectation/chance to win.

That sounds like it answers the question to me. 10 times in 54 sounds close to 1 in 5.

I like this analysis of this. People often remember what odds they will get to flop things but not what they will get for a hand to happen with five cards on the board. I think ive got a chart somewhere telling me the odds of flopping things. Does anyone Know where i can get odds for things to happen over five cards?
