I think the correct play in that situation is really based on your opponent. I'd need more info before deciding how to proceed. If UTG is a player who is capable of bluffing when a scare card hits then it's a must call. If UTG is a c-station who only bets when he has something I might fold. I'll assume this is my first hand at a new table. You're getting over 2/1 so you can afford to be wrong here more than half of the time. I say call.

With the fact that he 's 2nd. lowest stack at the table, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he was a donk who's been bleeding off his stack Based on that, a 56 would be a perfect hand for the equine genus to feel confident. You lost to an eight high straight, right? ---

re: What would you call this play? poker I'd call this play building a big pot with a crappy hand. Check behind on the turn for pot control. What's he calling a psb on the flop with that he's then folding when an 8 hits? If you're ahead it's by a lot, and the same if you're behind. I'm not trying to get psb's in back to back with tp2k. As played, I'm checking his AF and W$SD and any other info I have to make a decision. In a vaccum, leaning towards call. 3.5:1 is pretty nice to find out how he plays, and use that info in future hands.
