There is no correct answer. You have to learn them all and then be able to play them all. The normal progression is probably loose-passive (mainly because it would be a rank beginners 'no-nothing' tepid steps into the world of poker style), perhaps followed by tight passive (sort of depends at what stage a new players actually decides to start learning how to play) Then TAG, and finally LAG. That is probably the path I took, and I'm not all that special. I didn't really begin to understand the game until I got to where I felt I understood the TAG game. That's when the natural transition to learning the LAG game occured for me. All of this is conditional on just when a player picks up that first poker book, or finds Cardschat. Keep in mind that the categories you provided are gross generalizations, and that personal styles will vary and migrate through the course of a tourney through that whole list.

Being patient but observant can be useful In poker, the name of the game is adjusting, but in tournament play there are different ways to adjust. That sounds old-hat and simple but it is true. What I did in one of the first tournaments I played was to be somewhat passive but ALWAYS observant. I played patiently and worked my way up, eventually sitting at the final table with someone I had played with very early on. We ended up heads-up, and I used my observations of him to eventually nickel-and-dime him out of the tournament. I was proud of that win! I earned it. And it might not have happened if I hadn't mentally catalogued his style of play. Hope this helps, especially new players.

i always play tight-aggressive at the beginning of tournaments and as it moves along i always play alot looser....it usually gets me in trouble when i get to the final table, but i always enter them with decent stacks. It all depends on the stake and other plays as well...you need to adapt to your surroundings.

Like all of these guys said you play should be determined by different situations. Are you playing strictly tournaments, Sngs, or cash? In tournaments I like to play fairly different in the beginning. I like to play tight, but I also do call with some hands like small suited connectors just trying to hit big. I do not call big bets in these cases though. I like to play tighter when it becomes mid tournament. Picking of people who try to steal and such is really easy if you play only 8s or better. When the antes come out STEAL STEAL. Beware it can be dangerous. Make sure the players on your table are tight if your going to steal. If there very aggressive just sit back get a hand and take em out. Build a stack and than once money hits you have breathing room to sit back and pick your moves. In sngs I like to play very tight aggressive works great. In cash I play very tight. I like to play the top 10 hands AQ 77 88 99 10 10 JJ QQ AK KK AA. Thats just me I guess

In general start tight agressive and loosen up to steal more later. But, it depends on structure, other players, stack sizes, reads, and other things so there really is not a right answer. You have to adjust to players at your table and stack sizes constantly in a tournament.

Loose aggresive for the win. Not dumb luck but smart losse aggresive. I play it that way on bodog $500 freerolls and will usually place in the money. As of right now It just started and ill be playing loose aggresive. Ill post back to let you know how i did

| For begining players such as myself it is recomended to play a more conservitive srategy with all its nuances (position--reads--best starting hands for each position etc) and it is also recomended to change up at different points in the tournaments ie--play tight at first and loosen up later on (many players do the opposite!) I wouldn't start right out playing TAG from the jump until I got down all there is to know about conservitive play , at least not at first! But I've found that with the lot I generally play with here at CC---I gotta watch my backside ALLA time, and costantly change up strategeys! Cuz---THEY GOT MY NUMBER! At least that's what I'm told! | There are alot of people looking for the "secret" formula that will make them a winning poker player. I feel that poker "styles" are more of a way of classifying your opponents to help you with your reads. The most dangerous players will play in such a way that you won't be able to put them on a "style" and therefore won't be able to read what type of hand they are likely playing. If you get focused on playing a "style" your opponents will eventually be able to tell what type of hand you are playing by your actions and you won't get paid on your big hands and you will lose more than you should when you are behind. |
