Position is important in any form. You have to know when you have positinon to execute a good bluff. You also have to know when you're out of position. For instance, if someone holds AQ and they are first to act, you probably don't want to raise because you're out of position and 8 other people could raise on you.

Daily Poker Quiz - Railbirds.com I along with half the respondants, picked the wrong (out of 7) answer. No one could even understand Quizzy's reasoning, as usual (click on the 'poker quiz forum' tab). Edited to add: Wait a minute. You posted this yesterday. So it's either: 1) You are clairvoyant 2) Bizarre coincidence 3) You are Quizzy!!!! lol Last edited by Divebitch : 12th October 2008 at 4:03 PM. |

Probably pot limit. In limit, it's harder to bluff with position and you can't suffer huge losses unless the blinds are very large. In pot limit, position is hugely important because you can control how big the pot will become on later streets. In no limit, people can shove at any time or overbet the pot in order to reduce the effects of position.

In Amazon.com: Elements of Poker: Tommy Angelo: Books, Tommy says "Position is not important at poker. Would you say that water is important at swimming? That speed is important at racing? No? Then don't say position is important at poker. It's more important than that."

Id say community card games such as Texas holdem rather than stud games. And as for limits , pot and NL. Limit has capped betting and is harder to bluff anyway so positional raises are less powerfull. Position is still an advantage but less so in fixed limit than NL

re: In what form of poker is position most important?? No limit for hold em obviously as you are going to be facing much bigger raises and playing for stacks much more often. Also if your question involves different games, I would say PLO is the most important game to focus on position.

fixed limit is based more on pot odds, so position isn't crucial there. no limit has the all in capability, which can be played from any position, so it isn't crucial there either. i would say pot limit.

His reasoning makes sense - I picked the right answer However, he overlooks the more important aspect of PL position. It's not the fact that all-ins will take away positional advantage on later streets, it's the fact that in PL, you can check behind and force the size of the pot to be a fraction of what it would have been (because he can't overbet on later streets). On the other hand, a value raise can win much more than a value bet because of the pot limit. Negreanu explains this to some degree on a WSOP video. If I come by it again, I'll link to it.
