When you are UTG you will likely play out of position the entire hand and all the other players get to act after you preflop. Ideally you should not play UTG at all!!!!!!! but there are some starting hands that are too good to fold. Therefore I suggest you play the following hands UTG AA KK JJ AKs AKo AQs That's it I spend alot of time thinking about preflop play. My opening hand ranges have evolved, expanded, contracted and changed over the past 150,000 hands. At this time this is my range: EP(UTG,UTG+1): AA KK QQ JJ AKs AKo AQs MP: all the above plus 99 88 AQo AJs KQs Hijack: all of the above plus 77 AJo ATs KQo KJs QJs CO: all of the above plus 66 55 ATo A9s A8s KJo KTs QJo QTs JTs Button: any pair, any suited Ace, any two Broadway K9s Q9s J9s T9s Notice I don't play suited connectors, rag aces, etc. |

| Generally, in FR, playing tight UTG and UTG+1 is suggested. Just how tight depends on several variables (stakes, table dynamics, etc.) Micro FR I would play pretty tight. I would drop AJ and KQ in most scenarios, and add in a few smaller pairs. That may just be preference, but I feel I can play mid pairs better when OOP than something like AJ. I tend to play something in between what fx and Double A have posted. Quote:

| NL 5 Playing NL 5 right now. Playing an overall looser game with smaller preflop raises. I open for 12 cents when entering a hand. I only play when re-raised with a legitamate hand. Quite often I will just pick up the blinds. Risking 12 cents to win 7 cents. I am doing this purposely, playing loose for the small money but then tighten up later. EP Range: AT+,KT+,QT+,JT,T9, 98; Axs, K9s+, Q9s+, J8s+, 108s+, 98s+, 87s+, 76s+ Any Pair I find that when I make a big hand, I am more likely to get played back at because of the image I have created. This range loosens up very wide by the time I hit the button. Notice my range stays away from dominated hands like K8 and A9 etc...I am more inclined to play suited connectors because they are easier to get away from. You either hit the flop or you don't. A9 on the other hand could get you hurt when flopping top pair...LizaBuv |

Is this for Full Ring or 6max? This range represents about 25% of all hands. That's a fine range for the button or possibly the Cut-off under certain circumstances but from EP this is a recipe for disaster unless you are playing at the world's softest tables full of retarded donkeys. First off the probability that most of these hands will be the best of all the other players seated at the table is very small and you have tons of dominated hands in your list. I play only 3.76% of all possible hands from EP, which granted is very tight but I've never seen any serious writing on Poker that called for playing more than 11% of possible hands from EP. There is no way you will show a long term profit playing that wide of a range, out of position in Full Ring. |

| re: UTG range? poker Having a default range by position is fine and it's probably a good exercise to define one for yourself but don't lock yourself into a range. Just because I normally toss A9 UTG doesn't mean I should never play it if the circumstances warrent it. Say the BB is a 90/10 station who never folds anything postflop and the rest of the table is your standard mix of decent to bad players, I'd raise almost any Ace or King, SCs, any 2 broadways, some suited Queens, etc. from UTG in that spot. Yeah sometimes we'll get additional callers who have position on us but they may not realize we're adjusting to the idiot in the BB and give us credit for our typical tight UTG range. Thing is that when we have that type of player at the table seeing lots of flops with them should be the priority not sticking to some manufactured range. |
