Too many players = pot odds to keep playing?

Okay, this is a hand history, but inspired by BBB's post about pot odds.

I kept calling here with a straight draw thinking that I had pot odds to call. Guys in early position seemed to be trying to force draws out, but there were too many people staying in giving me (I think) pot odds to keep calling.

Was I right?

Yup, this looks good to me. One general comment though: Calling on the flop is a LOT better if you're closing the action (i.e. you're last to act). Being re-raised after having called is virtually a disaster when you're drawing (although a fairly small disaster when your draw is strong, and your draw is very strong).

Thanks FP. I hate to lose relatively big money like this and I don't like to chase generally so I like to make sure the situation was such that I should be chasing.

With regards to your comment, you're talking about the original bettor who has yet to call the raise, so the risk was him reraising, say pushing all in or something after calling. Maybe not in this instance, but in general?

My guess was that the raiser had TPTK which turned out to be true, but I guess there's not a lot he could do to punish all the potential chasers as there were too many people calling. If you overbet the pot but you've got people right behind you hell bent on calling, it gives the people behind better and better odds to call.

On the other hand, he didn't even bet the pot on either round, so it's his own fault if I hit my draw.

Right, I was referring to the original bettor. In this case, he didn't raise (and they rarely do) but the times they do someone who's drawing is stuck in the middle; wishing they hadn't called to begin with and now being forced to either make an expensive lay down or continue this cycle of leaking money.

you have to realize with that many callers you are probably only drawing to 8 (6 for the straight and 2 for the king)outs instead of 10 since some of the straight cards are nullified by flush scare cards. adjust your pot odds accordingly.

With that much action, i would consider ony hitting the straight is the winning hand, i would atleast expect a set or two pair. I think the king wont help at this point, it might even give a straight to a J9.

I think you should just consider that you have 8 outs to win the pot. Both of the calls, on flop and turn is correct, if you want to gamble a bit. I would not do it late in a tourney, i know it's cashgame but just to give an example of what i think

Thanks for pointing that out, joose, 'cause I didn't think of it at the time. I haven't learned to think that far ahead, especially while playing.
