Tips for getting back into live limit Holdem Once upon a time I was a pretty wildly successful 2/4 and 4/8 player at Foxwoods, but once upon a time was the poker boom when everyone was happy to flush away as much as they could manage. I've played some in the meantime, and done alright, but of course its nothing like the good old days. It seems to me the approaches put forth in Lee Jones, Low Limit Holdem, and Sklansky, Malmuth, and Millers, Small Stakes Holdem are still solid styles, and of course math doesn't change, however it seems the flavor of fish has changed substantially. It used to be that people were splashing around with little to no math knowledge, but now it seems most of the total clowns at least have a sense of their odds. So I'm wondering if there are any tips to be had on maneuvers that have come into or gone out of vogue in limit holdem. I haven't played limit seriously in a long long time, focusing on NL online. People who have read the two books listed would be especially good, as you will have a good idea of how I was trained to play limit. Any tips on play specific to the 2/4 and 3/6 at The Sun or 2/4 and 4/8 at The Woods would be sweet too. Thanks all.

To be honest, keep sticking with NL holdem if you can. The winrates for limit holdem are tiny compared to the edges in NL. Good limit players average 1.5-2 BB/100, while their NL equivalents average 5BB/100. There's just no contest. I started out as a limit player many years ago but moved to NL. I actually think Lee Jones' book should be required for NL as well; it's that good. I still play limit occasionally as they don't have NL at canterbury park or when I'm on vacation. I disagree that the fish have learned odds; I can't find any evidence of that. They have learned things like being tighter preflop and not folding 2nd pair or better, but that's about it. Your edge on the fish is almost always that they don't bet when they should: you will lose less when you lose but win more when you win. That's often a pretty big edge right there. I do have some stuff on my site for limit, though I'm a NL pro. Last edited by dakota-xx : 22nd November 2009 at 7:07 PM. Reason: removed promo tag

I agree that NL is the goal, however for the moment I don't have the bankroll to support live NL, and can't take the variance. From what I've seen the games are still so soft that I am pretty certain I can outstrip my online NL earnings by playing at the higher blinds. As to their learning the odds, this may vary by area, but while the low level players aren't using their odds correctly, they have a concept now of drawing, and very roughly when they ought not bother. Still tons of error, but during the boom a table where literally nearly everyone was just calling down to the river to see what happenned was not uncommon. Which would, of course, eventually make some of them accidentally correct, but their plays seem more intentional now, even if misguided. Anyone else out there got some tips for a former limit player getting back on the wagon?
