Generally just being annoying, big stacks may do it to delay time so the blinds get round to the shorties and sting them a bit more. Dunno if i'm entirely correct here but i've never heard of any real reason for it.

Understand the bigstack part. But why on earth would you do that when the tourney is just getting started.

re: Taking time to play hand in MTT poker

You can use the slow strategy for several tactics.
  • One, to take a measured pace on every hand you act on you usually will raise or fold in the same slow manner.
  • Two, you can use it to annoy those who are already impatient and want to get their money all in quickly.
  • Three, you can use it to identify those who are less patient so you can alter your strategies against them when you are in hands to get at them.
  • Four, there is a theory out there that the fewer hands you play in a tourney, the better your chance of making a cash. I think its somewhat true, but only have anecdotal evidence to support it now, no real hand proof.
  • Five, you may try to record evidence of other players and how they play each hand they are in. It takes some time to take those notes.
I'm sure there are other reasons I cannot think of right now (my brain is tired and I will soon head to bed). But thats some of what I can think of.

Find a way that you enjoy playing and then take advantage of others in your game. Good luck!

People don't get in front of their computer right away when the tournament starts. I notice in a lot of the tournaments I play, the first hand is extreemly slow, untill the people that arn't there get auto sat out. Also it is really slow after break for the same reason.

Somtimes when I'm in a big hand and playing multiple tables I will be focused on that hand and miss my turn at another table. I try not to do that because I don't want to slow down the game... However, it happens and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I'm a fan of seeing as many hands as possible, but like gns said, it works well to annoy some people and then they just throw in so they don't have to put up with it anymore.

Early on I see no point to this, low blinds, see as much as you can

Don't forget that a lot of players multitable so they put their attention to the table with the action which means that other tables automatically fold which takes the max time.
