Still no bankroll...:(

HI All,
I have been really tryin to get somewhere as far as making money at the big tourneys.I think my main problem is patience.Here is one situation I had the other night ,I entered a freeroll at ultimate bet .com and was on fiyah for at least the first two hours maintained the chip lead 90% of the time ..it was down to the top 100 and it seems like the gates of river hell opened up on me and then I got anxious because I was losing so many chips and just started playing stupid.Should I take my own breaks in between or something or what would really help me ..all advice kindly appreciated.....peace.

I´m pretty new to this forum, but I have been playing for a couple of years.

What I can tell you is that first of all if you want to get a bankroll by playing freerolls the $100 with 3000-5000 players at UB is NOT a good way to get quick money. What you need to do is to find smaller freerolls with fewer players like the cardchats freerolls. Another thing that you might want to consider is to take one of many nodeposit bonus offers that are available on the internet like yourpokercash.com or just google nodeposit bonus.

When it comes to the game itself I think that the best advice I can give you is that when the blinds increases to a level thats higher than your startingstack you need to think of your chips as units instead.
What I mean by this is that many players get nervous and starts playing crazy when the pots and the blinds gets really big, this is where you need to think of your stack in form of BB´s.

Lets say you have 35k and the blinds are 800/1600 you get dealt A4 off in early position what do you do? You think: You got an ace, big blinds, hmm lets take those blinds, you raise to 4000...

Lets say you have 900 and the blinds are 25/50 you get dealt A4 off in early position what do you do? You think: You got a shitty ace, bad position, the blinds are still low, hmm I better fold...

Now whats my point in all this?

First of all I´m not counting on that you personaly thinks like this but its a common mistake beginners make, including myself.

However the mistakes that are being made here are :

In the first example you got more BB´s (22) than in the 2nd example (18), but still you feel forced to gamble.

If you decided to raise in the 2nd example I think you would raise more than 2,5 BB´s (4000/1600=2,5) so that people actually would fold, maybe somewhere around 3,5-5 BB´s (175-250).

Lets say that you raise in both examples, in which example would it be easiest to fold? The first one? Why is that, when you got a bigger part of your stack in in the 2nd example.


Finally im not sure if this is to any help for you Im just telling you about the mistakes I made when I started playing.

1. Think of your stack as Units (BB´s)
2. When you decide to raise at higher levels make them belive you (at least 3xBB)
3. Dont worry to much about being chipleader early on because its not often early chipleaders actually win, last man standing

Yea if you want to try freerolls, you definitely have to pick and choose which ones to enter. My brother was trying this, and he would play the 2700 ones at FT, or the 12 000 ones at PS, which is more or less a complete waste of time (i think the most he ever won was 6$ at FT, and then he lost it :S).

He stopped playing at PS, and then got invited to a 500$ country specific one (probably to encourage him to play at it again), which he won like $25, which is more than enough to start a BR.

BETTER option tho imo is to look up the no deposit sign up bonuses online...there are enough out there and most offer 10-50$. It isn't very hard to build a good roll from 10$+ (imo), it is getting the 10$ from freerolls which is the bitch.

And as for MTT strategies...imo play very tight aggressive at the start. Many donks that will go AI with nothing and you can't call them. Wait for your premium hand to double up on some calling station. Then later on, start playing alot looser and very aggressive, because alot of it becomes a fight for the blinds/antes at that stage of the tournament. Picking up 30chip blinds at the start is absolutely pointless...picking up 11 000 blinds + antes later on is essential.

Of course, if you start playing bad after a couple of bad beats and you're late in a tournament, get up and go get something to drink/eat. etc. Leave the room for a few minutes as long as the blinds aren't going to eat you alive before you return.

I use to have a wiffle ball bat in the garage and I'd go wack the ball into the garage door for a few minutes to blow off steam. It's amazing how hard you can hit one of those wiffle balls after someone's three-outed you on the river. Then I'd go back and resume playing. Usually the hands I missed while sitting out weren't worth playing anyway.

Dont know since the merge But my goal going into those crazy freerolls into those freerolls was to get to 40 k in chips as quick as you can then coast till it gets close to bubble the bubble and then start picking off the straglers who are going all in in desperation. The goal then is to get in 1000 dollar sat event. Then they get looser after the bubble sot titgten up. My goodness 4 hrs for that chump change you need to be playing an sng or something on the side to make some money anyhow and they are good practise for the final table. LOL

patience is a virtue, but not one that i have. lol I struggle with getting impatient during tournies and trying to force hands and it always sends me to the rail. Lately I have taken breaks for 5 or 10 minutes when i start making reckless calls or playing stupid and... it has seemed to work some.

If you going to play in a tournament you have to be patient, if you not are patient then you don't have chance to get the big money.
Sorry for telling you this but this is my honest answer. I don't like to play freerolls so much, well only private tournament is fine but not normal freerolls since it's sucked out you really fast.

I hope you understand, I got a nice bankroll when I'm only begin to play 11th november when my 18 birthdays was then I got a few 100$ in each poker client I'm playing

Well last night I finished 47th. out of 1944 on a buy in tourney on pokerstars.
At one point in the later stages of the tourney I was chip leader for a while.
Then I got stuck in a few pots that I could have easly got out of,that cost me some chips,and two crutial situations where I had at least a 75% chance of winning that turned out bad for me.
I guess what i'm tring to say is patience,patience,patience.......
I was diapointed in myself last night after my finish,even though I know I made well into the money,I should have placed the final table.Not because of the two bad beats I got but because of the few pots before them that cost me chips that I could have gotten over the bad beats with.

Freerolls are a small way of building up a roll. If you cash, save the change and build it to where you can play a cheap sng. Hopefully you cash and begin your grinding.

Just remember, freerolls are FREE. So you're going to get a lot of bad play. Don't be upset over it, just except it.

I have to to agree with everyone here, in order to make it to the money you have to have patience. Most of the time I myself lack this little virtue. Blinds are so low in the beginning that it isn't worth playing crap cards for. Have the patience to wait for the good cards so you can get a decent stack or start bluffiing when the blinds get higher. If you show that your a tight player when the blinds are low, it is much easier to steal the blinds and anti's when the they go up. People will show you a little respect, just becareful of the nut that has a super high chip stack that is willing to call you with any 2 cards. You will have those in any tournament. In most cases you want those people in there so they can double you up. Usually the more chips people have the more they are willing to risk. Goodluck I hope that everyones advice has helped you.

yes, patience is important . I played a tournament in ultimatebet and tourney is for 9 paid outs and there are only 12 remaining and i am with double the avg money and i lost my 80% of it on a hand and i frustrated and lost my patience and called all in for 86off and i busted out in 11th place.

if i maintained patience and keep the remaining 20% i would definetly won some money.!!!

I think those big tournaments, it is fairly rare for even good players to make it to the final table. There are a lot of stupid plays, and you can get sucked out pretty easily. What being good at poker means you just have a chance at making the big money. Also, you should be making the small money pretty regularly too, where you only get 2-3 times your initial buy in. For big tournaments, I recommend playing that in the background while you play one or two more smaller sngs. That way, you won't get too bored. Of course, if you are close to making the final table, don't open anymore sngs!

Patience is very important in big MTTs, and every time you go on bad beat have a break for a while.

I usually do really good until there's about 1/4 of the players left and I get tired or anxious or something and I make bad calls. Then I usually get out b4 the money and regret playing that long to not win any money....lol
