sng v tourney - different play???

i'm relatively new to on-line poker, but seem to be going okay. In fact my forte has been sit-and-goes, and have made a good bankroll playing them.

but my problem has been multis. I keep entering these tournaments, in the hope of landing a big pot of cash for little outlay. i always seem to build a decent bank as the tournament progresses, then seem to bomb out close to the money.

my sit and go winnings have to a degree been subsidising my tournament play and to give you an idea of my nature, i'm into sports and athletic endeavours so love competition and a challenge. perhaps that explains why i don't really play cash tables as i'd rather have a finish line than just "grind"

does anyone have any general advice on making the money in the tourneys? i've begun to question...

a) if the type of play is completely different to a sit and go and i have to adjust how I play
b) if the time it takes to make the money is worth the effort (i could play and finish at least half a dozen sng's to one tourney)

perhaps the former question may take some additional reading (books on the tourny subject?) and the latter posters may have their own recorded data of the plusses and negatives for sit and goes v tourneys in relation to a better way to actually making money

any advice would be warmly appreciated!

Yes. You need to play S&Gs different than a MTT.

You are constantly facing a full table, until you make the final table. There are "life cycles" of the MTT that you don't face in a S&G.

I'm not that great at MTTs and a relitive newcomer myself, so other may have some better more complete advice.

There are a number of articles on the difference between SNG & MTT play in the archive and or articles sections. Yes they have to be played differently, you might also give the Harrington on Hold em books a read. Good luck.

You need to practice time/felt management totally different when you play MMT's. I teach a method that works rather well if you are interested.

In my experience, I play many more hands in SnGs, where as in MTT's I play mainly from late position and premium hands. In MTT's I just aim for taking down small pots as opposed to doubling up.
