Small pocket pairs at a tight table
The title kind of explains it, what do you like to do in that situation? Unless several people have called behind me, I will fold this most of the time.
But once in a while I'll limp, if I set I hope they hit a hand worth calling, and if I miss I'll try to steal depending on the situation (this is only if 1 other person called). At a looser table, you definitely have the implied odds to limp but when you get to a table where there are frequently 1-2 people in the hand to see the flop and when a half pot bet takes it down postflop you definitely aren't getting implied odds. On the other hand, when you miss you're still more likely to pick up the pot if your opponent missed as well. So my question is, do you think calling preflop with 22-77 at a tight table is a smart play? Would anyone raise with this range of hands? Without taking into account the steals it's obviously a horrible play, but do the times when you and your opponent hit (hopefully not an over set) along with the steals make it profitable for the times when you miss and your opponent(s) call you when you try to steal? I'm still torn on this. I just absolutely hate it when I flop a set and simply pick up another 50 or 75 cents (I generally 4-table 25/50 cent tables) as opposed to when I play live or am at a looser table, where if I slow play or lead out with about a half pot size bet or so I can pick up more than enough to make limping with low pockets profitable. |

If you're getting the implied odds then calling is profitable long term. A lot of the time it depends on what your opponent flops too or if they raised this PF. Alot of TAG style players will overvalue TPTK/Overpairs and this is where you get paid off big when you set up.
Also, if you become known as a set miner then you can bluff occassionally to represent a set when you miss. I'll raise occassionally with smaller pairs from EP/MP as a balancing play and I use these hands to blind steal in late position, especially in tight games. |

Depends on the game.
I raise in late position if I am first in the pot with low pocket pairs, If you have postion, you can stil take the pot without hitting your hand As for calling with low PP, depends on a few things. Position, If some one raises from early position, and I am in fairly early position myself, I am folding, to much chance of a re raise behind me. If you are in later position then it is certainly worth a call, providing there is someone in the pot with a big enough stack to give you decent implied odds if you hit your set. |
