Small Field Large Field

Is it necessary to adjust game play based upon the size of the field? I seem to fair better in large field games than small field games, and am just wondering if its the luck of the draw, or if i should play differently.

if you play a tournament with 3000 people versus one with 12 people ofcourse you need to employ different strategies.. you have to be more aggresive in a tournament with thousands cause if you just sit on your but and wait for aces you'll soon find yourself in the bottom 25th percentile of people.. the chip leaders will have 10x your stack and once you get moved to another table you'll be short stacked... in a tournament where you have 2 tables only.. you can keep up with play and afford to play less hands...

very large field tournaments reward aggressive chip accumulating play more, since even though there may be as many as 2,000 entrants, the payout structure dictates that the big money is bunched up in that little final table. reaching it requires earning a whoole lot of chips... a lot more than you can expect to earn from just playing big hands and doubling up with them

on the other hand, take a single-table sit 'n go to represent the opposite extreme. here, tight play is very much rewarded because to do well in a SnG you generally need only to double up a couple of times, so you can wait and pick those spots carefully. and sometimes just from using that tight image to steal a lot of blinds in the late game, you can earn yourself a spot in the top 3, if not win it outright

small field MTTs are of course bigger than a single-table SnG, but the same principle applies, just to a lesser and lesser degree the larger the field gets
