SB and BB as position????

OK, this may be a real stupid question, but I always thought that the SB and the BB were both late postion, as in both of those two you are last to act PF. Am I right, or are they both considered early positions?

sure, why?

It's considered early position because you are 1st or 2nd to act after the flop.
I guess you could consider it late preflop position, but only if you're planning to push all in. Any other play and you're out of position for most of the hand.

thanks kcanuck, I'd never really thought about it till now I guess.I'm kinda trying to improve my positional play so I figure it helps to know what actual position Im in!

But with new aggressive play styles being all the rage, both SB and BB could be considered semi hot. As i read somewhere: "UTG is the new button".

SB is first to act after the flop, therefor out of position.

You are in position only for 1 round of betting. If you go all in you did so in position. If you don't, you have the worst or second worst position at the table for the next 3 rounds of betting.
How often do you have a hand that you want to push with preflop? How often do you have a "push hand" but need to see the actions of players in front of before you push? The latter is the only case in which you have an advantage in the blinds. I'd really hope that is a very small percentage.
More often than not you are going to call, raise or fold. If you call or fold your position is now one of the worst at the table or you're out for the rest of the hand. If you raise and get called the same applies. If you raise and get reraised the second sentence of the previous paragraph applies.
Position, in a nutshell, is having the advantage of seeing the actions of the people ahead of you before you decide if you want to get involved in a hand.
Where's your advantage? In terms of position, if you are still in the hand after the flop, you have zero.

preflop you are in the late position in the BB but post flop you are in terrible(early) position. Hence me loving AA in the big blind!!

And this is a good question... I have always considered the blinds, well - as the blinds . I would have to agree you are in early position, because you act first after the flop. But you are in late position prior to the flop. I gotta look this up.. I'll be back.

thanks rob, i looked it up on google and it said SB and BB were early position, but I still don't know.

As did I ^. Got the same result... who's to argue with google? Anyone have a definite answer? Or should I consult wikipedia?
