Question on playing style

Hello all, new to the forum- looks great! I am currently 25 and been playing home games since I was 13.. but just started to get really into tournaments around the area. Right now I am doing low buy in online tournaments for practice. I was reading a book and said in the early rounds of a tournament play only premium hands and do 3-4x the BB usually in early position. Play medium hands from middle to late position 3-4x BB if first into the pot. This seems to work pretty well, however the players at the table really do read into you and see you only are playing premium hands early on so if you bet they pretty much know you have a hand. What do you guys consider to be a good time to start playing medium hands pretty strong? I know early $10-20 not much to win in the pot so no big deal. Also I want to try to vary my play style so I am not read so easily. How do you guys usually play from early to late in the tournaments? Want to get some good ideas to improve my playing style.
