ProphetEyes' Building a BR From Scratch Hello cash game players. I'm fairly new here at CC, but have been playing for a few years now, mainly cash games at Full Tilt, .05/.10 NLHE. But after Black Friday I took sometime off from the game. I recently got back into it after discovering Carbon Poker. Being a super broke hippie I don't have any money to make a deposit, so I started grinding out the Funstep SNG's there to try to earn a single dollar to go from. After winning the dollar the first time, I quickly lost it at the .02/.04 Limit Hold'em tables following a truly abysmal showing. I played too many hands and ended up facing a few bad beats as well. So I went back to the grind again at the Funsteps. A quickly got another dollar. This time I went back to the same tables where I played a tighter game and made it up to 3.57 the first night. Not too shabby for some pennies! But since then I've had some swings. This was about a week or so ago from today. My bankroll is now sitting at 4.33. Which I'm happy with, but would like to improve it more. It's been as high as 4.77. I'm starting this thread for advice on building a bankroll from scratch and to track my progress as I do so. I know it's going to take a while before I get anywhere substantial (unless I get that stake from CC!) . I will be posting hands in the cash game analysis section for further improvement, as well. Good luck to all at the tables and may the poker gods shine there light down on you all! Prophet

the only problem with moving from FLHE to NLHE is my bankroll... I dont have a bankroll higher than $5 so taking on a NLHE table would cost me about my whole roll for one buy in... seems like a high risk high reward situation to me. If I win the cards chat staking contest I will definately be taking a stab at NLHE, but for now I think the I should grind it out at FLHE... what do you think?

oh i apologise, i only saw that you used to play 10NL on FTP and missed than youd started playing limit games. my bad. still, why not just play 2NL? 2 full BIs on a lower stake is always gunna be better than 1 full BI on a higher stake. variance is more likely than not going to roll you, so id be looking to play a bunch of tables as opposed to a higher stake. having said that, youre going to need to play so damn passively and avoid getting it in pre/otf to make sure you dont get variance owned that your profits will suffer a lot. youll also kinda have to check back in spots where you should be betting to avoid losing max which is missing a lot of value, but imo necessary if youre unrolled. ive made 5 BIs at 2NL up to 50+ countless times, so id suggest you need this much. maybe more funsteps til you have a little bit for cushioning in your roll for the badbeats?

re: Poker & ProphetEyes' Building a BR From Scratch i wish i could play on PokerStars, but on Carbon the lowest stake .02/.04, which would be just one buy-in. maybe after i get enough for two buy-ins ($8) i will try that. and yeah iv'e been messing with the funsteps more again but its such a grind for a buck... but so is limit

I would say that they are... since I had another winning day today. making 2-3 bb/hr. BR now up 5.65. A couple hours ago it was just over $6 during an amazing run of cards. I am now exhausted and going to hit the bed. But winning another $1.32 total today is another step in the right direction. Not bad for penny limit tables. Hopefully tomorrow will be more of the same. I did have one troubling hand that I posted in the hand analysis section having to do with implied odds, but no responses yet. I also multi tabled today. The trouble with limit at such low stakes is that there arent many opportunites to buy pots, but I did manage to do that some tonight. so now i'm going to bed and will see you all tomorrow. Good night and Good Luck at the tables!

GL prophet, building a roll from nothing can be done. I have done it 2x myself Stick with the limit cash (seems to be working for you so far) and just keep grinding. Soon the 50c or $1 you are happy with per day with rise to $3-5 then $10, etc.

re: Poker & ProphetEyes' Building a BR From Scratch Had a tough go at it this morning when I triend something new, but am still above $5. I sat down at a 6 max .05/.10 table to test my luck there but it was brutal. 6 max is not my game, as I was seeing too many flops... moved back over to the game i've been beating and played three at once to get back most of what I lost. It woked out. I'm about to head back to the grind again now. Post results later

If you cant afford to put even the minimum into your account but honestly feel that you are good enough to make money have you considered getting someone to stake you?? This is what I did.. I lost my job and had to cash out my pokerstars account to pay rent. I tried building a new Bankroll from scratch but kept losing the few dollars I got from freeroll tourneys. So I got my mate to stake me 20 dollars with the agreement that he would get the 20 back when I hit 150 plus 5% of my monthly profit for 6 months or if (in the highly unlikely event) I lost it all I would owe him 100, which I could pay in installments (If you know that you wont lose this is irrelevant). I started off at .02/.05nlhe taking the minimum of 4 dollars on to the table. This is a higher percentage of your bankroll than I would advise normally taking on to one table but theres not much choice. Stay on the lowest level until you can afford to step up. I am currently playing at .25/.50 and turning a steady profit even though i still have to give out 5% for another 4 months. I also try to take no more than 5% of my Bankroll on to one table. Also I know you say short handed is not your strength but I would advise that they are a lot easier to start on. You have less opponents to try to work out patterns for. If you concentrate on the 2 guys directly to your left the most thats almost half the table and certainly the most important half as all of your bets have to go through them. Finally, play a tight-aggressive style. Narrow your range of starting hands but if you are going to play, be in there raising. You can always fold if you meet too much resistance. If someone consistently 3bets you pick a spot and come over the top otherwise you're just gonna get runover! Good luck

thanks for the tip. i am not new to the game, so i have no problem picking up on patterns. ive been playing hold em successfully online for years, though Black Friday put a damper on that for me for about a year and a half. Ive applied for the CardsChat staking contest and will find out in a couple days if i have made one of their stakes. if not i will consider asking a few people for a similar deal. i have one friend who generates all of his income from poker and he may be willing to do such a thing for me. but for now i'm going to conintue to grind it out the way i have been. 2-3 tables at a time FLHE. my roll is now at 5.85 and ive topped 6 a couple times today but am just under 6 dollars as of right now. but i will keep this in mind. also when i can afford to move up i will star playing no limit. pick up more small pots that way. also get called with air in the limit games by people hoping the turn or river will improve their hand and sometimes it does. anyway, thanks for the advice on a good staking deal. going to put in one more session tonight and then i will be back to post results.
