A Presumption of Blind Stealing Gone Wrong

$1/$2, BB is semi-loose/aggressive. I believe my way of thinking earned me an extra big bet here.

PokerStars 1/2 Hold'em (9 handed) FTR converter on zerodivide.cx

Preflop: Hero is SB with Q♠, A♠.
7 folds, Hero raises, BB calls.

-- I pondered just completing, but decided that winning the blinds was at least better than winning nothing at all. But aha, he called. That either means he has something decent, or he's putting me on a steal.

Flop: (4 SB) 4♥, Q♦, 9♠ (2 players)
Hero bets, BB raises, Hero calls.

-- I decide that if he put me on a steal, I might as well play the part. Bet/call and checkraise the turn if things still look good.

Turn: (4 BB) 2♦ (2 players)
Hero checks, BB bets, Hero raises, BB calls.

-- Things looked great! And he did just what I wanted him to: Bet into me.

River: (8 BB) [Tc] (2 players)
Hero bets, BB calls.

Final Pot: 10 BB

Well it look like a perfect play to me, even though you were out of position you used it to your advantage. Dont tell me he was playing J 8 !

I don't think you could have played it better. Now my question: Did he outdraw w/ J8 or KJ? Perhaps a suckout with 9/4? I would love to know what he was holding?

Naw, my AQ was good; he held KQ.

It looks more like he just called with his KQ figuring he had the best hand. Most players would raise a flop with top pair-2nd kicker.

Your check-raise was good on the turn, but the reason he called was because he most likely felt he had the best hand, not because he was putting you on a steal...

Put yourself in his shoes, you most likely play the hand the same exact way.

On a sidenote...why does everyone always assume that the opponent had some miracle straight hit or some weird two pair? Just because someone posts a hand does not mean it is a bad beat...

Suppose we are just so used to having that type of bad beat hand history discussed.

You're right, I have to say. My thinking of how he played it was clouded by the fact that I had stolen several blinds from him earlier, and I made the decision (even while posting) that he was being aggressive back because he put me on nothing.

Making a read and sticking to it is a bad thing. Thanks for pointing it out.

You'd have been dead to 99, though. I played AQ today very close to this same way and the guy slowplayed me with AA by just letting me raise out of position. I hate playing AQ & AK! My wins are so small and my losses are so large with them. They're like a disease.
