Hmmm. I`d say it`s like boxing. You can learn by trial and error if you enjoy pain, but you`ll get fewer lumps if you use a coach.

Check out the Articles tab at the top of the page. There is information there about the most popular books.

It would also help us to know what you are looking to play. Assuming it is Hold'em, most likely No Limit. But what else? Tournaments? Ring Games? High limit, low limit?

I think it would be really helpful for you to also check out our guide and the Articles Section.

I liked reading "Championship No Limit and Pot Limit Hold'Em" By Tom McEvoy and T.J. Cloutier. It helped me a great deal.

Learning ultra-conservative strategy, suitable for big pots with lot of dead money

Intermediary stadium
3. Texas Holdem for Advanced Players - D. Sklansky, M. Malmuth
4. The Theory of Poker - David Sklansky

These books are for masters to became a grandmasters, but it's not too early introducing them. Easy reading, just to see what poker is about...

2 stadium (playing for dollars)
5. Small Stakes Holdem by Ed Miller, D. Sklansky, M. Malmuth
Learning edge strategy, getting on horseback of mathematics and riding for profit

3 stadium
Rereading books 3, 4 and 5... Further playing and maturing... Reading

This one is especially good, IMO. Be aware though, that it is aimed at experienced players and jumps straight into fairly complex ideas, assuming that readers will have the basics down already.

Play Poker Like the Pros and SuperSystem two are good if you want to learn Omaha8b and S8b PLO and such. PPLP is pretty basic and the limit holdem section is actually bad, way too aggressive.

Getting Started in Holdem is a good basic holdem book

Small Stakes Holdem is a must read for limit players, but the examples are much looser than you will find online. The concepts apply though.

The Harrignton on Holdem Series is a must read for NL MTT players.

Eric Lingren's book is an interesting read as is Championship NL and PL Holdem. The Championship book is way too tight and basic though. It isnt a bad starting place, but if you have read HOH you dont need it.

Poker is not a "feel" game, it is a math and strategy game. You can hone the startegy with feel, but understanding the fundamentals will give you a leg up on the competition.

Theory of Poker is a good reference book.

Yep, NLH theory and practice is a great book. It is on the advanced side.
