| Plugging holes in my game - Restealing from the blinds from unknown villains Crucial info: - 10 NL 6-max (no FR) - On Ultimatebet I usually play pretty loose on the button, but tighten up considerably when OOP, wether in the blinds or in early position. I'm fine with my UTG, UTG +1 range: it suits me well and I don't think I'm losing much EV by being careful with what I play since Ultimatebet is a nitfest at these stakes (or at least full of transparent players), so getting 3-bet holding KJo UTG by BTN usually mean you're flipping, a small favourite or WB. I also steal enough from late position to make a profit there. Where I fear I might be losing too much money is by not defending (either by calling or raising pre) my blinds from unknown villains. I have a few example hands and I'd wish that some of you could analyze my lines and rationale here. Hand #1 All fold to BTN who makes the standard 4BB raise. I'm SB and see 9Ts and call. BB calls. Both are unknown but are presumed to be relatively sane and competent. Flop comes 3,9,Q rainbow. I bet 3/4 pot, BB folds, BTN raises. What is my move here ? Fold ? Call ? If call, what is my line if a K, J, A comes ? Reraise ? Hand #2 Same hand but instead of donking flop, I check. BB checks, BTN bets 1/2 pot. What do I do ? I can't obviously fold since this is a c-bet the 2/3 of the time villain doesn't hit, but I also have to account for BB who could very well be holding a Q in his hand. Since this hand is less polarized towards "you are beat donk", let's say I just call and hope I just made BTN bluff. BB folds whatever junk he called with pre (good for us). We are now heads up with BTN. I know I could have raised and played for the pot, but let's say i want to extract max value or play small pot poker. Turn brings the magnificient 5 of whatever wich is a brick here. What do I do ? Do I value bet my hand and basically turn it into a bluff if I'm called (I doubt NL10 will be floating me on river or drawing to overcards much) or try to get a second bullet from BTN ? The other scenario is that I get and get a fold (unless villain calls thin, but it isn't 2003 anymore) or a raise, wich spells "gg wp" for the hand. The trouble with hands like this, even on flops that are pretty dry such as this one (only JT had a serious draw on there and the hand is made less likely by me holding a T), is that being OOP and calling the preflop raiser means that I know almost nothing of his range (a competent player, or even a fish that knows about blind stealing, can have napkins here if he knows I'll fold my blinds if I don't have a somewhat promising hand ; he could also have the nuts). But I just can't 3-bet reasonably often to make BTN think about not stealing my blinds, not with BB still to act and a drawing hand such as 9Ts. Or can I ? The rationale behind me not doing so with 9Ts, but definately doing so with AJo+, 88+ and KQs is that it puts me to a tough decision, out of position, for a lot of money, if I get 4-bet, since villain range will be better than mine or air a lot. Blind defense would have me put a lot more BB in than what the initial antes were (without seeing a flop). The other more simple option would be to just fold speculative hands to a single late raiser due to pot odds being usually horrible (unless minraise), but that leaves me open to easy exploitation. Heck, I know I do it to nits who fold anything by AK, JJ+ in the blinds, so why couldn't other do the same to me ? The same problem arises from the BB, but it is usually less severe since I'll have position on SB at least and will usually get better odds at the pot to just flat. I know that the optimal play we should strive for in the blinds is to lose the less money, but I'm really at a loss as to what startegy would yield the best results (and I haven't even talked about scary/drawy flops). |
