Playing a tight table?
What strategy do you use when you end up sitting at a table full of rocks? To clarify, I am talking about players that only call raises with premium hands and then lead out/call/or re-raise if they hit a good piece of the flop. If they miss, they check/fold. The entire table is pretty much this way...on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being a stone wall, the table had no one playing less than an 8.

Raise practically ATC and when you get action fold anything but close to the absolute nuts. But Monoxide is right. Although rock play is pretty exploitable, stealing the blinds isn't going to be nearly as profitable as finding someone willing to stack off with K7 preflop and taking his stack. Unless you're playing extremely high limits you'll find plenty of people like this, so look for a table with more loose donks.

100% true, but I like to play these tables occasionally because position actually means a whole lot here rather than those dammed freerolls . These tables provide you a game that will help you shape up your fundamentals and give you good practice for those card dead sessions. However, on days you are looking for a quick fix for your bankroll, I suggest move on to the bigger fish (literally). |

I knew I would get the move tables answer
![]() Last night I was in the situation and my strategy was to raise pre-flop then make a continuation bet (most of the time)...check/fold to any show of strength. I didn't raise ATC, but loosened up my range and would raise to get position. The results...I was slowly drained as 2 out of 3 raises would get me the blinds, but on the hands where I was called by 1 or more opponents, I would lose 2 out of 3 hands post flop. Maybe it was just a bad run...I even lost decent hands like JQ that hit a J on the flop. I folded the turn when an A hit and the rock fired then showed AK with the nut flush draw. Raised QQ, K hit on the flop, fired continuation bet and I was raised...folded, rock showed K. I'm not saying my play was great, I definitely had some hands where I might as well have just handed the money over to save the dealer the time and effort. I guess my original post was just to see if my strategy was way off or if there are alternatives I had not considered. For a while I switched to limping in position with ATC, hoping to catch a good flop that would let me break a rock but I was not hitting anything. Tight, passive, aggressive? You mean tight pre-flop, call flop/turn, aggressive river..in otherwords trap? |

Yes indeed! I will usually do this for awhile to loosen up a table. Your reading skills are crucial here mind you. After awhile the table usually catches on and thats when the fun starts! NO LIMIT IS A CREATIVE GAME! And that means often changing gears....playing sub par hands out of position ....etc...etc. Your goal here is to get the rocks on Monkey tilt and start taking stacks! |
