Personality to play at the table

i just want input on what kind of personality u bring to a table (obviously a live table) ... read this little story of why i am asking this question, and then answer, this story has meaning to my question... last night i played at a 1/2 NL cash table and 3 hours in im up about 450$, having a really good night, and this girl sitting to my right, who was a very tight player but had a lot to say and we bullshitted the whole night through... anyways our table gets down to 6 players and the dealer says they were breaking down the table so we could move to different 1/2 tables and said this would be the last hand... I get Q 9 of spades in the cutoff, and i raise it to 12$, everybody but 1 person calls. FLOP is A 8 4 ... all spades, i flop the 2nd nuts, the woman to my right, bets 50$, i smooth call and the rest fold, the turn card is a 3 of hearts, and she says to me "are we going to bet like maniacs? or can we check this one down" me having the 2nd nuts, and wanting to make money, says lets bet like maniacs, she throws out 150$ pissed i wouldnt check out, i go all in and she calls (she had a little over 500$ b4 the hand started, and i had her covered) she flips over J 10 of spades for a jack high flush and i win the pot... after i win the pot she says to me "you could have checked down with me, thats all my money dude" and she starts crying, now my question is, do u think its a good idea to be buddy buddy with a person the whole night and risk having that happen, im a poker player i play to win money i dont care if they r the weaker person and want to do stupid shit that cost them money, but at the same time i made a woman who i was being buddy buddy with cry for about 5 minutes and i hate to admit it but i felt a little bad. so anyways, do u think its better to just be quiet and just play cards, or to try to be buddy buddy with the risk of winning a huge pot off some1 u became good friends with at the table and then have them hate ur guts when its all said and done.

True poker players know there is no such thing as friends at the table, If someone wants to engage me in friendly conversation I will kindly oblige but will not take my eyes of the prize.

As for risking them hating your guts, if they can't handle the loss then maybe they shouldn't play poker.

The straight answer to your question would have to be, stay quiet until someone engages you in conversation and don't ever feel bad for taking money from another player because a better player than you won't feel bad taking your money.

I dont think there is anything wrong with becoming buddies with other players at the table. Most people play to have a good time anyway. My view on this is: I try to have fun whenever I play, but also keep in mind of what I am playing for. Players will see me as talkative, friendly, etc, but Im going for their money. I cant be upset if I take someones money, no matter how much we talk or how 'buddy-buddy' we seem. And I cant be mad at them if they take my money. And thats how you should see it, IMO. Be friendly with other players if you want, but dont feel bad if another player makes a mistake and you capitalize on it.

Whatever the advice others give you, the only thing that will truly work in the long-run is BEING YOURSELF!

Everyone has their own thing, for their own reasons. Find out what "your thing" is, and bring THAT personality to the table.

You're going to naturally experiment w/ all types, but you'll always come back to what FEELS the best, instinctively. Don't be like X because he says it works for him, do what works for you.

As far as your whiney little neighbor, hand her a Kleenex and a copy of Terms Of Endearment!

honestly, I don't think u have any reason to feel bad, because look at it like this, she would've took your money, that's why she plays poker? unless she only plays to make friends? But really poker players make bad friends, since there always watching u constantly, and trying to figure u out all, hahaha, it's natural to feel bad, but it's not your fault, someone had to lose regardless that's the game, we both can't be winners correct?

You should have offered to lend her money so she can carry on playing with you, proceed to win that money off her, then charge interest on the amount you lent her. If she doesn't pay back, hire some goons to locate her friends and loved ones.

yea oz, i think she would have soft played it, i mean she was soft playing the 3rd nuts why wouldnt she soft play the nuts, and only info she had on me with her having the 3rd nuts was me smoothing a bet.. i dunno i hope i dont get into that situation again, i can deal with men flipping out swearing raging etc its actually funny, but a woman balling her eyes out sucked at the time, i find it hilarious now though.
