Overbet After Scare Card?
This is mostly to people who play low limits, but my friend and I have recently been discussing what's going through peoples' heads when they push after a scare card hits. Example:
PokerStars Game #13140189173: Hold'em No Limit ($0.10/$0.25) - 2007/11/09 - 17:54:00 (ET) Table 'Edmee III' 6-max Seat #1 is the button Seat 1: Yankeezss ($22.50 in chips) Seat 2: dudidudi ($24.40 in chips) Seat 3: ArmyBoy12 ($23.65 in chips) Seat 4: Grangeia ($45.50 in chips) Seat 5: DeGro007 ($22.65 in chips) Seat 6: friend ($24.05 in chips) dudidudi: posts small blind $0.10 ArmyBoy12: posts big blind $0.25 *** HOLE CARDS *** Dealt to friend [Ac Js] Grangeia: raises $0.75 to $1 DeGro007: calls $1 friend: raises $3.50 to $4.50 Yankeezss: folds dudidudi: folds ArmyBoy12: folds Grangeia: calls $3.50 DeGro007: calls $3.50 *** FLOP *** [4c 3h 7s] Grangeia: bets $4 DeGro007: folds friend: raises $7.75 to $11.75 Grangeia said, "KK?" Grangeia: calls $7.75 *** TURN *** [4c 3h 7s] 8♥ Grangeia: checks friend: checks *** RIVER *** [4c 3h 7s 8h] A♥ Grangeia: bets $29.25 and is all-in friend: calls $7.80 and is all-in *** SHOW DOWN *** Grangeia: shows [Ts Tc] (a pair of Tens) friend: shows [Ac Js] (a pair of Aces) friend collected $50.40 from pot Grangeia said, ")!"=?(!POWSHIOUASODIUQW" *** SUMMARY *** Total pot $52.95 | Rake $2.55 Board [4c 3h 7s 8h Ah] Seat 1: Yankeezss (button) folded before Flop (didn't bet) Seat 2: dudidudi (small blind) folded before Flop Seat 3: ArmyBoy12 (big blind) folded before Flop Seat 4: Grangeia showed [Ts Tc] and lost with a pair of Tens Seat 5: DeGro007 folded on the Flop Seat 6: friend showed [Ac Js] and won ($50.40) with a pair of Aces I did the replacing, "friend" is not his actual username. But the guy checks the turn with an overpair, and pushes all his money into the middle when the A hits. This makes 0 sense to me. There are countless examples that I've observed, I just don't understand the logic behind it. If they missed they fold, if they hit, they call. |

your friend had under $8 left. villain's bet was close to 1/5th of the pot. i don't like how he played the hand overall, but i guess he figured he was committed to calling the rest anyway, so he might as well push it in himself |

Well this isn't the only situation, but my question is if you're going to shove on the river when the scare card comes, why not shove on the turn? Here's another example where there's a lot left:
PokerStars Game #13664148693: Tournament #69297114, $5.00+$0.25 Hold'em No Limit - Match Round I, Level I (10/20) - 2007/12/05 - 10:49:49 (ET) Table '69297114 1' 2-max Seat #1 is the button Seat 1: friend (1500 in chips) Seat 2: franktank07 (1500 in chips) friend: posts small blind 10 franktank07: posts big blind 20 *** HOLE CARDS *** Dealt to friend [7h 5d] friend: calls 10 franktank07: raises 20 to 40 friend: calls 20 *** FLOP *** [4d 6d 8h] franktank07: bets 100 friend: calls 100 *** TURN *** [4d 6d 8h] 8♣ franktank07: bets 200 friend: calls 200 *** RIVER *** [4d 6d 8h 8c] A♠ franktank07: bets 1160 and is all-in friend: calls 1160 and is all-in *** SHOW DOWN *** franktank07: shows [Kd Kc] (two pair, Kings and Eights) friend: shows [7h 5d] (a straight, Four to Eight) friend said, "gg" friend collected 3000 from pot *** SUMMARY *** Total pot 3000 | Rake 0 Board [4d 6d 8h 8c As] Seat 1: friend (button) (small blind) showed [7h 5d] and won (3000) with a straight, Four to Eight Seat 2: franktank07 (big blind) showed [Kd Kc] and lost with two pair, Kings and Eights I'd discount most of these to just stupid play, but when people continually do this, I'd like to know what the hell these people are thinking. |

In the first hand villain clearly states that he is putting friend on KK; thus the shove with TT is an attempt to get the better hand to fold, since the ace is a scare card for friend as well if he is holding KK.

the 2nd one is clearly pretty bad. it's just another case of nonthinking players turning real hands into bluffs (and in this case, it's a bluff that's almost never going to fold out a better hand, so it's doubly awful). the majority of players just don't really know what they're doing, that's what it comes down to. if hero has an 8 or A, the shove is bad because he's almost always getting called. if hero has a 6, the shove is bad because he's not getting value. if hero has a draw that missed, the shove is bad because it doesn't allow him to bluff it
what are they thinking? probably not much. maybe "I HAVE KINGZ, IT IS MY GODGIVEN RIGHT TO WIN THIS HAND, I AM ALL IN" |
