Only heads up (good or bad) Hey CCers. I have been doing o.k lately playing only HU due to not having the time to play tournaments. Only micro limits btw . Do you think playing ONLY HU is a bad thing even if your winning more than losing? It would also be interesting to hear off anybody else who sticks to mainly HU games. Cheers

Why not? I primarily only play MTT"s. If it keeps you entertained and you make a few bucks, great! But, I wonder the same thing. And I wonder if we are the exception or more of the rule and how long will it take to get really bored. One big drawback for me...When I try a new game occassionally, I am like a FISH out of water.

Heads up is a great style. Intense, action packed (unless you come up against mr AA/KK/QQ...and nothing else!) and if your any good, very profitable. Just take into account the rake though. Typically 10%-ish of the buy in. So if you play 10 HU matches and win 5, your losing out...you need to be winning 6 to break even, 7 to grind a profit. If your winning 70% of your HU games, keep at it!!! Playing the micro stakes wont do any harm. I play tons of HU omaha at $2, and do ok at it. The heads up games are pretty soft up to the $10level imo, where the competition kicks in. If your above average at NLHE then try the 4 seat $6 token games on Tilt, fairly easy to crack and a $26 token for winning 2 matches is pretty nice! GL.

Actually winning 6 of 10 is more than break even Lets assume $5.50 buy-in with .50 going to rake. (10%) Buy-in 10 times = $55 Cash 6 times = $60 Net Profit = $5 $.50 profit per game played Snow |

HU is fun, I just hope you can keep a level head and don't tilt easily; there's going to be a butt load of swings. Cash games would be another option if you have time constraints. ...did you seriously ask if the fact that you are playing only HU and winning is a bad thing? Anyway, if it's a large enough sample and you are indeed a winning player, then no, this is not a bad thing.

You could argue that becoming a really good HU player, where you have to learn to put Villain on ranges and understand betting patterns/habits pretty thoroughly to become a really good HU player, is the most effective way to learn NLHE. If you can do this thoroughly w a single player both preflop and postflop and take that skill to 6max and FR, you will be a step ahead of a lot of players who come at NLHE from the other way around. I'm mostly referring to medium and deepstack HU play fwiw - in shortstack HU play (late SnG HU after the blinds have escalated), you also gain valuable skills regarding ranges, but most of the play is preflop (i.e., you have to shove or fold pf more frequently).

i agree, heads up takes alot of skill and takes a while to learn so if your doing good and winning keep at it. especially when you go up against a player that is new to heads up you can end up breaking them for most of their money no problem. its definitely a skill you will need in poker whether it comes down to it in a tournament or cash game.

re: Only heads up (good or bad) poker Playing HU is a very good way to learn to read your opponents and can be very profitable. You only need to win 53% to make a small profit providing it is 10% rake so with a little knowledge you can make a good profit from this type of game. I have played just over 200 now and starting to get to grips with them, i made a slight loss in first 130 but have won 80% of last 70 games only a small sample size so far but hopefully can contine from here.Good luck at the tables.
