O8PL starting hand selection...

Hi all.

What starting hands would you normally play say midway through MTT middle position with your stack being average?

Do you think all 4 card should work together or not?

I know in an ideal world yes, but what do u think about the following hands preflop? Imagine they are all rainbow

I'm new to PLO and I get beaten by people playing those hands all the time, but I don't play them, not rainbow. Maybe the last one, if I think I can see a flop cheaply.

2457 rainbow? Really? I wouldn't call that a marginal hand.

A lot of people say PLO8 is a game of the nuts. True most of the time, but I can`t believe and I know that people do not wait for only AA23 ds - no matter what they say.

I have come on here showing a hand history of my starting hand being QQ34 and being told I should have folded preflop.

Depending on your read of other players, I think you can play 2457 rainbow. Ace hits flop u r possibly looking at best lo hand, 3 or 6 on flop and u r looking at a straight and possibly lo.

I would prefer to play 2457 than KK74.

erm i dont know too much about PLO8 but all i know is 6788 is def not marginal, is a fold, unless your in late position and you know they blinds will fold a super high % of the time. middle cards in plo8 just play so badly after the flop..

these hands you suggest are raiseable in late position,, i might play aa79 from early, wouldnt play kk from early most times.

hands like a234 play better multiway so i generally limp in trying to get a3 or something to worse to call. hands like aq4j with say aq was suited hearts, i will play for a raise, as it plays better heads up.

QQ34, is another hand i may play in late position, but its tricky to play post flop.

these hands obv play better if they are suited or double suited even better, and just liike any form of poker i can think of, respect position.

im not really an expert, o8 is a gmae i get along with, but im not master, i think someone else will be able to direct you better

these are definitely killer hands. small-mid pairs kill ppl more often than not. u hit a set, go all crazy with it only to find someone with a bigger set.

u're best sticking with connected cards with NO GAP i.e. 4567 of course double pair or double suited ones are the best. and the most important thign is, remember WHY u play the hands for. 4567 u wanna get straight/combo draw/straight with flush redraw. some ppl go crazy with tubs etc and thats what kill you.

I would play NONE of these hands from middle position. Then again, I play cash games. YES, I believe all 4 cards should be working together somehow. They are not always working together towards the same end (high vs low), but 3 cards minimum should work together. And those 3 cards must be strong (i.e. A23, a suited ace with Broadway connector, etc). Your AA and KK hands are dogs if a rainbow.

Your A369 example, you must hit the 2 and you are golden (provided a low even hits), or else trust me, someone else has the A2. The 69 is NOT working for you in any way shape or form. I kinda like the 6788 the best, as many will fold those cards. Bear in mind, you'll be splitting the pot with a low if you have a nut straight. Your 2457 is a middle gapper, won't go into it, but bad news, better if an ace hits.

I don't agree that tese are killer hands based on mid position and mid tourny.

The A369 if sooted may be ok to limp. But you're setting your self up to be scooped or quartered withh and of the rest. I'd fold , table dynamics with standing, most of these, most of the time.

If you open A369ss for a pot raise, or even a limp, and get multiple players to the flop. And the flop comes 478r. what are you going to do? You have non nut draws all the way around. At times, if you PFR'd, you can fire pot and hope to take it down at best. And your burning chips if you get raised or even called often.

Heck out of all of them. the 6788 or KK74 would be best because you'll know wher you stand, if I had to play them.
