No Limit or Limit Tables??
Hope this is not a retarded question. But I see a lot of post about Limit tables. I, myself have really nevered played too much Limit holdem, mainly just NL. Is it better than NL, meaning, is this where you should start?
Just wondering how its better to play Limit, like styles of playing would be better for Limit than NL. Is there a way you should play Limit tables? |

Limit lets you chase more draws, since the bets are smaller in relation to the pot. And single mistakes hurt you less. And position is even more important in limit (at least in my experiance), since you're more likely to get raised/raise.

Limit can be good to play as a change of pace. I play if I'm making too many big mistakes at NL. Like C9 said one mistake won't hurt nearly as much. Limit can be good to learn about calling bluffs as you have to see showdown much more often and you can get a feel for the likelihood of opponents hands. Limit can be really annoying because of the lower penalty for mistakes. Poor players can go on a longer positive run without being punished.

Ok, I see. I mean I knew that the payout at a limit table can be lower, cause of the cap. But good point about being a change of pace. Maybe something for those days where it seems like every move you make is obvious or wrong, but you still want to play

Quote:
In no limit, if you are loose with your starting hands, you can make up for it by getting your opponent to fold when he has the best hand. You have "fold equity" because you can bet big enough to drive opponents off of hands. In limit hold'em, you don't have fold equity. So you'll see showdown more often. And whenever you see showdown, the cards matter. And when the cards matter, you want to be playing the better cards. |

Wait are you talking about Limit Holdem or those crazy ass CAP Limit tables where the max bet is like $3.50 or something? If it's the latter these are generally just put your max bet in and hope your hand is still good at the luckfests. If you're talking about true limit holdem (like the other's in this thread) it's almost a different game and you'd do well to read the strategy articles here before you even play a hand.

Oh sorry, I was talking about Limit tables, no cap. So is there any money to be made at limit tables, or is it more for training and that sort of thing. And I'm not looking to get rich overnight (who wouldn't love that) or anything, but do many make any real money at limit? Seems like the big fuss is over NL, at least there is more action.
I'm just wondering if I should broaden my play a little. I know more is probably better, (unless you suck at all of them) but should I take the time to learn Limit as well? |

stars has only cap tables I believe, and I play them from time to time for a change of pace, as mentioned above and usually if I don't have time for a mtt. I'm not gonna play for any big stakes yet as I'm sort of just practicing so I usually entertain myself at .10/.20. I really should play higher but it's so entertaining at these levels
If you've got some time though, you can easily turn a $4 buyin to $20 in an hour. you really need to see these HH's and tell me what this guy was thinking on the river, calling...only 2 of many hands. I started w/ $4 and cashed out w/ $18 in about $30 mins. ez money imo: this was my 1st hand. Good sign... first hand, he's first to act so he has to bet or he looks weak. Then he picks up straight draw on turn, surprised he didn't raise. In the second hand he had an out to the nuts, who the hell folds that.
Yeah the play is so terrible in low limit (watching pros doesn't look much better) I think its the only reason I win. I think several decent players would just lose money to the rake otherwise. |

well it was obv in his mind that 2/3, 3/4 were within your raising range on the turn. He would have.
Don't even try to rationalize winomike. Edit: now that I think about it 3/4 is a possible hand for alot of players here. Winomike is on another level from us. |

haha...I was joking with the play by play undiluted... and james sometimes players build potodds by betting with nothing...and we're back to the fact that bad plays don't hurt that much.

oh my gosh i figured. I am just still laughing at the play. and yes, it's tough to get anyone out of the hand preflop. If you intend on playing limit seriously, good luck mr. moor. Just play higher limits where the play is at least 'not' nothing but a laugh |

yeah, that seems to be the conclusion that i'm getting. Harder to bluff, can't shake anybody, damage is less for mistakes. I think i should at least get familiar with Limit... As stated above, its a good change of pace..
So what is the average you play compared to NL tables? 10%limit 90%NL ? I don't think I should even ask this yet, but how many of you guys dabble with other games like stud or omaha? |

ive lost more than i win when playin limit holdem (i usually get sh!#ty and sit out within half hr of losin to chasers, which i wouldnt mind if they were half decent cards to start out wit) i play omaha which is limit anyway and dont do 2 bad, but im still green whenit comes to omaha (ive got to learn to not see so many flops) and i play stud but still just learnin so i can play some horse games.

I started playing Holdem a year ago and thats all i played. Went back to playmoney to learn other games this year and I really like HORSE, specifically stud H/L and razz. I think those are games I'll be better at than NLHE in the future.

I think I only play limit about 5% of the time, then HORSE 5% of the time. I'm not as comfortable playing higher stakes at either of these games just quite yet, so I mainly play NLH 90% of time.
but HORSE is so much fun! |

Limit most of the time (95%), but almost all Omaha High/Low - there the bad plays pre-flop hurt them more... Holdem it's tougher, because while the odds are that you'll come out ahead eventually, you'll have big swings, and at full tables the increased number of bad plays can make the individual plays get better pot odds and not be so bad (by comparison in High/Low you're playing to get the nuts, and generally benefit more from more players staying in, not less)
