How do you play in the first couple hours of an MTT before antes kick in?

The main thing to keep in mind is that most of the early players are moronic and will call anything. As play progresses a few of them hold on, but the greatest percentage are much higher calibre poker players.

my main problem seems to be earlir on, I catch kings or aces mid position, make a big raise then the manic to my left goes all in ( usually with crap ) table folds to me and i'm left with the decision? heads up with a lucky donk more often than not thats when I leave ;( but if I fold A's & K's then what am I to play?

what do you mean by catching As n Ks in mid position what sort of kickers you have are they suited etc.
Maybe Play alot tighter from mid position only play AQs and AKo + AKs From mid position and KK or maybe KQs (dependent on action before but fold to All in). Obviously your range will be abit wider from later position |

Play tight Shiver and get any reads from players early on, cause if you survive you may meet them again. TAG first 30 to 40 hands until you can build your chip stack then consider lesser hands later on. Be conscientous of what effect the wager has on your chip stack and are you willing to go allin with your cards if need be. This is my style, experiment with others and see what works. The question is the way you play now are you getting into the money, if not reevaluate your gameplan.
KC's strategy is good advice. |

This is what i would suggest. This example is early, middle, and late of the first couple hours untill antes kick in.
Early Play-(First 20-30 mins)- Stick to AA,AK or KK maybe call a limp or two tryin to see a cheap flop with a small PP. i only call the limps and then fold if they dont hit. it helps keep my table image as semi-tight so that everyone doesnt think ure waiting on KK or AA lol. Middle Play-(about 30 mins into trny untill about first 60/75 mins)-Open up the range of hands. As most uberdonks are gone at this point or u have already identified them. This range would include QQ,JJ,1010,A10 and higher suited, and still occasionally the smaller PP since these hands dont come that often to keep my image as a semi-loose player. Late Play-(75 mins untill 90/120)By this time u should know who is playing weak tight and i would keep my hand selections about the same but be a bit more agressive at this stage. This is about the point antes kick in and u want to have a good strong table image to be stealing them. Would start maybe tossing a couple raises with good suited connectors out there to throw off opponents. Make bigger preflop raises with quality hands and maybe repop the same person playing weak tight a couple times so when u pick up a big hand they are more likely to pay u off with a marginal yet crushed hand. |

I've been trying different styles against different players. You shouldn't have a strict, rigid style against all players as it is easy to exploit. After you observe how the table is playing you should be able to recognize who to bully and who to avoid.

I TRY to play suited A down to A-8----unsuited down to A-10----any two unsuited cards 8-9 or better-----K-Q, K-J off when there are antes----no antes, K-Q------if folded to me on the button, any A,K,Q suited----OR, if ya wanna, any suited cards 4 or higher and any unsuited 8 and higher! Oh! w/antes raise 3Xs more as from UTG---Play tight early in SnGs and loosen up later!! Finnaly, according to Chris Ferguson, if 1st to enter the pot, NEVER CALL!! Raise or Fold!

depends are you playing a double stack or a regular?
either way you should always look for a double up hand...so im talking AK AQ AJ AA KK QQ JJ etc. you should always be patient and after youve doubled up and have a comfortable chip stack then you can play the hands you like and comfortable playing. also try to keep your chip stack over the average |

There is some great advice that KingCurtis has given about these tournaments. I tend to watch my stack the same way as in comparing it to the averages and when it comes to small pairs just call with them because who knows you might limp your way into having a huge hand.
