Was it me or just dumb luck I normally play Hodem but occasionally PLO, which I played last night. Some of the other players know me as somewhat tight. Last night i was a bit more aggressive, plus I was getting lots of good cards. (Aces with kings, jacks etc and same suit connectors. I had bought in with 250 and was up a couple hundred in a 1-2 game. I was dealt A hearts, Q clubs, 10 hearts, 4 hearts. The flop came A-diamonds, 2 hearts, 6 hearts. This gave me a nut flush draw, two aces drawing to a set and draw to broadway. I was in the middle position. Others limped in and my max pot bet was 15 so I did it. Several others called and a couple folded. On the turn another ace came up. I bet the pot which was $100. The guy following me called. It was just him and me now. He had been aggressive all night but i was able to take down a few big pots from him. One he grumbled about for a long time. The next card was another ace, giving me a set. I thought about checking and seeing where he was but bet the pot which was about 200. He also calls. By this time, I figured he had an ace too and hoped the river would pair one of my other cards giving me a boat because my cards were higher than the low cards on the board. It came up a K hearts giving me the nut flush. I put him on a ace and the same set as mine, with no chance of a straight based on cards. If he had two hearts, they were obviously lower than my ace. I hopped he had not paired one of the other cards on the board giving him a boat. Since two of the previous three hands I had taken smaller pots holding AK, he thought I might have the same. In fact he even mumbled about it. I bet the pot which pushed in all but 20 bucks of my stack. His stack was about the same as mine and he pushed. Of course, I put the my last 20 in. Should I have read his mumbling about my having a K as a sign he had a lower boat? If I had checked, I'm sure he would have pushed so I figured I would act first and maybe make him think I had him beat. Did I make a mistake or was there nothing i could have done differently?

You might want to re-read that and also sort your terminology out. A set can't be possible because you don't have a pair in your hands. You mean trips (one in hand, two on board). Also so far flop is: ![]() Turn is: (you didnt say which suit)River: ![]() So you have quads according to your story... ?

Sorry, yes, I had one ace in my hand. (how do you get those little suit graphics?) I had the A hearts. When the 2nd ace came on the boar, it gave me trips (two aces on board and one in my hand). I had referred to this as a set. From his betting, I put him on an ace in his hand pre-flop and so he had the same trips as me. What I didn't know was he paired the deuce. When the second ace came on the board, he had a boat. Sorry about the confusion, (I repeated the line about the ace on the the turn by mistake in my original post). So at the turn, I'm sitting on trip aces and a nut flush draw. All the cards in my hand were higher than the board so I was hoping to pair one in my hand, giving me a boat. With trip aces and a possible nut flush there was no way I could throw in the towel especially since I had contributed so much already. Since he had been aggressive, I didn't know he had made the boat. Earlier, he had made similar pot sized bets with only two big pair. When the king of hearts came on the river, it gave me the nut flush. Folding just wasn't an option in my mind. Now with these details any advice?

re: Was it me or just dumb luck poker You don't have a set unless you have a pocket pair and hit a third card on the board. Shoving this river is only going to get you action from better hands. b/f or C/F or C/C if he's aggressive. mostly c/f

I say mumbling is to create false sense to you and deceitful. He likely had A6Kx. Got lucky on the flop and got more lucky on the river. Fold to a big river bet. I say b/f. Make a thin river bet and hope for a call. Hope he has only trip Axxx or lower flush Where is this live PLO game? Last edited by dlam : 7th February 2012 at 4:01 AM.

#1 In PLO it is a mistake to put someone on trips without also giving credit for a boat. If a pair is on the board (especially high) that means a serious boat alert. If you don't have it then someone else probably does. #2 You are right about being committed - you built up a huge pot on what could possibly happen - that's on you. PLO is a game of the nuts - don't build huge pots unless you have the nuts. You piloted the hand and he let you. You over valued your hand on the turn - especially when 2 of your 3 aces are also his. If he has 66, or 22, or KK - you're hurting. If he has A2, A6, AK - you're hurting. I'm not going to do the math but that's a lot of card combinations agaisnt you #3 Grumbling - you have to decipher if that's a tilt or some well placed Hollywooding on his part. If you're playing me I can tell you that 9 times out of 10 it's all an act. #4 Tighten up your game. You will get plenty of callers with far better hands.
