A Look At Heads Up Play

Recently, We've had some threads asking some advice about Heads up play. It just so happens I ran across an article written by Dan Clauss dealing with heads up. It makes a good point stating that a common mistake beginners make is not thinking about their opponent's hand and concentrating on their hand. It claims that 33% of the time your opponent would catch anything on the flop.
You will face a lot of agressive players during heads up play so you need to be aggressive. The article states that aggressive players don't like to face aggression.
Pre-flop, you need to make a small raise on maringal hands like suited and unsuited connectors. This gives you a read on what the other opponent has. If he/she calls, they probably don't have that great of a hand because if they did, they would have re-raised. Especially against an aggressive player, who will call anything. A tight/conservative player would probably fold if you raised.
The article gives an example hand to illlustrate what its trying to explain but I'm not going to mention it here. The point is, be more aggressive. Raise more and try to get a read on your opponent. In the long run, you should be successful in heads up play.

I was in a situation tonight and the guy I was playing called but he'd make a raise of half or all in each time. Put me on the spot because I had all small cards I tried all I could think of even reraising his hand. He had just run me out of chips with this type of play.

aggression is very important.
most pros play heads up raising from the button every time regardless of the hand they have
Lately I've been playing nothing but heads-up with my brother every once in a while
its definitely the most effective strategy IMO

Shelyn , when someone is runing you over like that, you have to punish his pre flop raises with any decent marginal hand . A with 8 or better kicker, A suited, pocket pairs, KQ , those kind of hands play well heads up . When pre flop he raises you and you hold hands like those push , and make him make the decisions , most likely he has junk and is trying to steal your money
