Limping in late position.

What do you guys think of this strategy in tournament poker if you're first in on the button or CO?

Say you have a 10 9 offsuit on the button and its folded to you, the blinds likely have weak hands as well like queen 5 and will probably check, and you've got position, is limping a good play here?

No because if they are holding Q5, you have close to zero implied odds. Raise it up or fold. If there are limpers in front of you, you can probably get away with limping, but I do not like to do that on most occasions because again, implied odds are not that great.

In that situation... raise or fold, dependant on the size of the blinds and how likely it is the blinds will fold, based on all the information you have collected on them

Mix it up, occasionally raise with those cards, occasionally limp, but even with limpers in front of you, from the button for sure you would like to see a flop. The CO is a little more demanding, and it would be either raise or fold with 9T or TJ, but not limp.

Limp? I hate limp, so does my wife

I love limping from the button with big hands vs aggressive blind players. I get raised a lot and can either play a bigger pot in position or re-raise the blinds who are usually rasing light.

If your going to limp in, you might as well make something like a 2.5x raise, that way you have initiative in a hand, this way if one of the blinds 3 bets you, you can easily fold with weak holdings and 4 bet with big hands. If you're limping weak hands, especially on the button, it really polarizes your range and there you will be easy to read and probably not get paid off if you hit a big hand.

Personally i just cant limp on the button with a big hand i have to raise it, i have been outdrawn on a flop so many times with KK or AA because i have limped it from the button or cut off.

From my experience of playing online (even though its not much) the question of limping or raising on the button depends on the number of ppl in the game. If as you said in the previous example theres only the Blinds left heck Id raise on the button preflop to see how much they want to play their hands. If they call, great your big hand is gonna get some action. But on the same token forcing them to fold is not a bad idea since you'll get their blinds and not risk losing anything to a bad beat which is something I've seen a good deal of on pokerstars.
Now if theres a lot of ppl in the hand still and it comes around to you on the button thats a totally different story. Personally even if I have the button in these situations I would probably throw away 10-9 off just because those ppl that called before me most likely have at least one card 10 or higher severely limiting my outs. And even with the big hands (AK AQ etc) I wouldnt feel too comfortable raising unless I had one of the top 3 big hands. But hey thats just because I have a conservative play style.

You will make more money if you raise. T9o is 43% against 2 random hands, but 51% against one - you want to play this one heads-up for the most +EV.

Calculations assume $1 BB, SB calls whenever you limp, SB folds whenever you raise, no raises pre-flop, and 100 hands run.

Against 2 other random hands, T9o is 43%.
You should win 43 x $2.00 (BB + SB) and lose 57 x $1.00
43*2 - 57*1 = +29.00

Against 1 other random hand, T9o is 51%
You should win 51 x $2.50 (BB + SB + BB_call) and lose 49 x $2.00
51*2.50 - 49*2 = +29.50

Looks almost even at first glance, but if you raise, sometimes they will both fold. The possibility of winning the hand without a showdown (either pre-flop, or with a continuation bet) makes the raise more profitable than a limp.

If you limp, you have absolutely no information about the sb and bb's hands unless they raise. If you raise and they call, they have a hand they can't get away from. Based on what you've seen from them up to this point, you might have a good idea of what they like to play, so you should be able to put them on a fairly small range of hands. That makes it a lot easier to play your hand.
