An Interesting Style Of Play

A good friend of mine plays this style religious online, with a surprising amount of success, okay he plays low limits but 50 dollar bankroll is alot for us students

He values his cards as follows

2 = 2
3 = 3
..
..
..
..
..
Ten through Ace = 10

He then folds everything pre flop if the combined cards don't equal 20.
Then at the flop he folds if he hasn't made top pair or a straight or flush draw. It funs to watch him play because he plays about 4 tables at a time and plays bugger all hands, something like 15% his stats say.

Any comments on this? Please point out some flaws in it so I can proceed to give him some shit

Well thats good style for him I guess. I think that is what Phil Gordon tells people on that bravo show (Good Black Jack hand is a solid starting hand)

Of course pocket pairs are not counted are they? Cause I'd call/play with a pocket pair.

Also does he limp in or no?

Yer he limps in.

He is so into this style he claims he "invented" known as the JV technique amongst my circle of friends, that he folded all pocket pairs below 10.

He limps in also to answer your question.

Strange way of playing but if it is succesful for him then good luck to him

Not sure I agree on the PP folds, particularly when short handed/on the button/low stack etc

To be honest while its not my way of playing his total played hands(around 15%) is spot on in ring games.Far to many people play far too many hands(myself included) and i wish i had that discipline.

Would probably work at low limits because most of the players are so bad. Good players would catch on pretty quickly and destroy him though.

Plus he's not really learning anything about the game by playing such a robotic style.

whats his name and where does he play?

you just gave away the most valuable peice of info in poker. how someone plays. that is more powerful than pocket aces.

poker is a game of information and situations. the more info i have on a player . will help make the the best decision in any situation.

i will not discuss how i play poker in detail. because that will hurt me when i play you.

i will say this.

this is my strategy. i am likely to play any two cards from any position, with any size bet. in any game with anybody.

that is a very nice bit of knowledge to know about anyone.

I have never heard of this system in Holdem. But I have heard of it in Omaha. I do believe I read this kind of a system in Lou Krieger's The Poker Player's Bible in the Omaha section(starting cards that equal to 40 was a great hand) But that's all I remember about it.
If the system works for him more Power to him

re: An Interesting Style Of Play

Yeah, you actually know how he plays now. So make sure when you have solid cards to raise him.
