I'm getting killed by sets lately..

This just boggles my mind because the odds of flopping a set are ridiculously low but it's happened to me four or five times in a row. I've gone down with A's, 9's, and 7's within the last week. Each time, I had the better of it going in and they don't hold up. I play in 2-4 nl games on Ultimate Bet and have lost a ton of money on these hands.

The 7's and 9's are great examples. I had the 7's at a six hand table, which I always play, and had a raiser and a caller in front of me, I push all in with my remaining 70$. The raiser folds and the caller calls my all in with pp of 4's. He's absolutely dominated and hit's his set on the flop. There was 34 bucks in the pot and my bet took the pot to around 104 bucks. I think that's a bad play on his part to call another 56 bucks KNOWING at best his racing but more than likely DOMINATED. I hate this terrible play.

The pocket 9's got beat by pocket 6's after a flop of 6 2 4 rainbow. I shoved and ran into the set of 6's. I feel like I will never show a profit when my best hands don't hold up. It's discouraging and very costly money wise. Does UB run their site honestly? I cashed out over 2500 bucks and it's been down hill ever since...

You are willing to stack off with small pocket pairs and are complaining about them not holding up? This thread really belongs in the Brag, Bad Beat, and Vents section.

Here is my advice, don't go broke with 1 pair.

then this really belongs in the BBV forum. But lets examine, if you are short stacked and you "have" to shove. Are you looking to be called in these spots or are you trying to be called by worse hands? Obviously if it is the second you have succeed and is just negative variance kicking your behind. If it is the first you are shoving into the absolutely wrong type of players, LAG's instead of TAG's.

If this is a cash game why do you have to shove? Just rebuy.

If by ridiculously low, you mean 8:1, then yes.

Less than $100 is an awfully short stack to be playing $2/$4 NL. The max buy in at most sites would be about $400, right?

If you are shoving with a short stack preflop, expect to get called. A large stack with middle pair has leverage against the other large stacks. But some large stacks will call a shortie with almost any pair or paint.

If you have a short stack, you should either reload or drop down a level or two where your stack would at least be average size, IMO.

You should never have just $70 in front of you at a 2/4 table. I never even have just $70 in front of me at .5/1. If you shoved on the flop with the 99, I imagine you were short stacked there, too. If you continue to have less than 20BB in front of you, expect this to happen ALL THE TIME. He definitely made a bad call with the 44, but you didn't lose that much money.

here are the problems that i see in play...

1) why do you only have $70 at a $400 table. that is just begging to get your ass kicked.

2) even still, with $70 you had more than roughly 17 bb left in your stack. not a great position to be in, but still not time to panic. you could have made some steal attempts while in position and gradually increased your stack without putting yourself at risk and stacking off.

3) you didn't leave much info about your pocket 9's, but here is what i was able to gather from the hand where you had pocket 7's. you made a push in a horrible spot. the action in front of you was a raise and a call. had there been 2 limps or folds in front of you, then i could see making a push. but with this much action in front of you, you picked the wrong spot to try and double up. true, you ended up isolating a pair of 4's that hit a set on the flop. but that is just semantics. you are looking at the results of the hand rather than the play itself. generally speaking, you should not push with marginal hands when there is so much action already in front of you. 7's are a marginal hand, and you picked the wrong spot to play them.

I like Steveg1976 advice...... go with it......... a pair is weak by itself............

move down in stakes if your willing to stack with pocket pairs or your gonna lose a shit ton of money

^^^ Good point if your "short stacked" at a cash game then somethings wrong because your either over your head and above your limits or you dont wanna rebuy. And you have to realize that in cash games ppl are gonna call you if they think theyre racing because cash games is a totally different mindset then a tournament its all about PROFIT PROFIT PROFIT

I am just the opposite. This month when I hit my pair of tens with a set on the flop I'm getting murdered by straights, flushes, or full houses on the turn or river.

Last month I got killed 21 times when holding full houses. I believe I have learned to be careful when I'm holding 10's full of jacks with the jacks on the board. Somebody always had quad jacks or a full house of jacks full of some other card.

Can you prove this ^^ that is pretty outlandish statement unless you can back it up.
