If someone calls to the river then shoves?

Ive been gettin trapped lately by people who flopped sets on the flop. I have TPTK. How can you tell if they are laying a trap or calling with a weaker hand? I haven't had any reads on these people that would help me, so is there a point where you should slow down, like check the turn if they call the flop?

Small flop and turn bets then huge river bet is usually a sign of a "slowplay." Just fold and let him make 4 BBs out of the nuts.

But the problem is that when I get to the river I've made two big value bets with tptk. Because they are not raising, I am assuming I have the better hand until they shove the river. Is there anyway to see this coming before I get a lot of money in the pot for value? And what % of pot should I value bet with tptk?

They can also be missed draws representing the nuts.

Check a street.

If there are no draws, check back the flop.

If there are draws and your opponent is aggressive, consider checking through the turn with the intention of snapping off a bluff if the draw misses on the river.

The reason hand strength increses so much on drawy boards is everyone bets into them really hard.. so hard in fact that all lesser hands are forced out. Most people bet the turn so big that no draw can really call, they often still do but the result is all the other hands in his range are forced out and so you end up against a range that usually plays well against TPTK

Most big river bets at the cash game are real hands. Don't think people won't bluff at all, but most aren't just firing away on the river cuz its the only way to win the hand for them.
Especially if you have position on them. They won't risk checking on the river to you in case you check back. So the big bet lead out should send up red flags.

I suppose because I bluff a lot I get paranoid that every1s bluffing me with missed draws etc. But you are right that they normally do have a hand with big bets on the river. I even tried to bluff two players off their hand - one with a straight flush and the other a set.

If you are going to check back the turn then your opponent needs to bet or bluff a lot.

The reason it works is when you check back the turn your hand dosent look very strong as all strong hands bet. In fact your hand looks like a draw. You bet the flop and then checked back the turn.

That in turn causes aggressive players to do 2 things.

1. bluff their missed draws... If your hand looks weak and their hand has little SD value then then they bet attempting to push you off a weak hand.

2. value cut themselves... By under repping your hand on the turn, all of their weak hands that call 1 street with the intention of folding all go up in value. An aggressive player value bets his hands religiously. So before the check they had a hand worth 1 street (possibly a mid pair with a BD FD or second pair with a BD FD) suddenly that hand jumps from being a weak 1 street hand to a 2 street hand.

The third thing is if they dont bluff and you have position, you can bet repping a bluff and expect to get called lightly.

The 4th thing is that depending on reads, pot size etc.. if the draw does come in you can call a small bet because often they will be value cutting themselves by trying to rep a bluff when they have TPGK.. again hoping to get called by worse and folding to a reraise.

Bet Bet Bet works well against passive players who wont put money in the pot without the nuts but will chase down any draw, but against a more aggressive player you are able to build small to medium pots where your hand fairs well. Besides, what if they check shove the turn?.. everyone bets the turn on a drawy board.. suddenly you take the fun out of flopping sets on drawy boards against TPGK

I had a hand yesterday where I had AA UTG. I raised to 3.5BB and got a call from SB. The board was Q810 with 2 clubs. He check calls me on the flop. A 10 hits on the turn. He checks, and I checked too (a mistake I think). A third club hits on the river and he leads out with a pot sized bet, which surprised me and after thinking it over, I folded. If I bet the turn and he still led out the river with a big bet, then I can fold. I played that really weakly. Lately, I've lost a lot of hands where I was ahead going in. (There was a hand where I had AA vs. 34os that worked out similar to that one... he made his trip 3s on the turn. I lost my stack) It's made me scared, thinking I am beat whenever I face aggression.
