I dont understand Pot Odds

Help me understand them. Are there a set odds for the hands you can make? say a flush draw is i think 4-1 correct? so what do your pot odds need to be in order to call? more than 4-1?

Late position, 5 pple in at 200 each , any 2 cards would be getting 5-1 (plus whatever the blinds were) pot odds. Still not a good reason to play 7-2o.
However, those small connectors look pretty good.

Pretty much...If I had some kind of made hand already and the table is really loose then I'll maybe call a little lower, if it's being tight and I dont' have any made hand I might wait for a little higher pot but yes you pretty much have the concept.

FYI...There are several articles about odds in out articles section and several good posts here in the Strategies forum is you look back a couple of pages.

Read the articles section; there is a great article by F Paulsson over there that should help.

re: I dont understand Pot Odds

I recommend Phil Gordons little green book. He has a great section on pot odds and makes it nice and easy to understand and calculate while playing.

Thanks, I am starting to get the understanding of them. I will definitely need to practice. One thing I am noticing is that before I just bet wildly. I also bet foolishly by minibetting. This allowed alot of bad beats which wildly pissed me off but I couldnt figure out why.

Now, I bet based on pot odds so as not to give that person the correct odds to call. It seems to work more than if I make a wild bet or go all in. I win more pots uncontested so i must be doing something right. I just don't understand the concept very well.

I have read through the section on pot odds here and have also read the section in HOH1 and johnny chans book. The problem is that I don't have practical knowlege of it. Only book examples. It is tough for me to read all the info plus take into account table position, and opponent information being such a new player. I know it will just take time. I have come along way from when I started, but I still am getting creamed sometimes at the tables because I don't see it coming until afterwards.

My Personal theory is that pot odds were invented by poker pros to get people to put money into the pot when they dont have good hands

hehe. Anyways im european and never been good at math, i do hower understand potodds well. I think its alot easier if you use percentages instead of the 1-2 1-3 stuff. Like a flush draw with two to come is about 35%(2-1) two overs 25%(3-1) and such. Just caluclate the 3-1 2-1 6-1 stuff(what do u call this in english by the way?) to percentages and its gonna be alot easier or atleast it was for me.

Pot Odds

I learned pot odds by playing all the time. It takes practice to understand them, you just can't rely on some book all the time. You'll learn from experience....@ least i did. GL on the tbls.

re: I dont understand Pot Odds

All drawing hands have a set of odds to go with them depending on your outs you have. If I were you I would download an ebook from ARES p2p. These ebooks have given me a lot more knowledge on hitting draws than I learned from say Phil Hellmuth's books.
