How to play Pocket Rockets
When i have pocket aces i cant resist raising the blinds but i find people calling with terrible hands then hitting straights or trips. I was just wondering if anyone has any better way of playing pocket aces against bad poker players.

Raise more! I know this is just another thread to get you to post #15 but i'll respond for the people who read it. If you dont raise more, you will be sucked out. Its better to win a few chips on AA than risk losing them all. Dont be afraid to raise a LOT more than the blinds if you dont want to risk losing.

Crippler, I assume you meant raise more in no-limit right? In limit or pot limit you're kinda stuck.
In any case AllInTime25 welcome to the club. If I had a buck for every time my pocket bullets were sucked out by some calling station who went down to the river... well I could play more poker! ![]() |

My thinking is this, if your not prepared to play the best starting hand with commitment then you shouldn't be playing poker. There are reasons not to push to hard ( early in a game where blinds are small and your first to speak, here you might want to call and hope for a raise or a small raise and hope for a re-raise, then put your stack in ) but generally speaking pushing your chips in will eliminate most of the hands that'll end up out-drawing you.
Wait till you have played pocket rockets about 200 times, then you'll be more than happy to see them. Happy Hunting. |

Hi,
My question is about pocket A's I always lose with them. Of course I'm new to playing holdem but from everything I've read they are supposed to be the best one could hope for? I'm sure I'm doing something wrong. Any ideas??? Thanks, Pokergranni |

As with every hand, there is huge variations in the way to play pocket A's.
If everyone checks and it comes round to me, I will normally raise 30% of my chip stack. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I will def call an all-in raise no problem pre-flop I might slow play on a small table, a lot depends on who is at the table. Only when you play them a certain number of times will you know the way to play them, and even then you are not guaranteed to take down the pot |

I think its a shame that people quit this site after their 15 posts. Do they even read some of the info thats freely available here ?? More valuable to anyone in my opinion that a few passwords to freerolls that they probably dont have experience to win anyway. Sorry just had to have a rant

My theory with AA is: Raise and raise big. Im either going to be pushing all in preflop, im going to be pushing in on the flop. and if im not pushing, im going to be folding my AA. unless of course i flop a monster i can slow play, but if its nothing for me to slow play...its either push or fold.
AA is hand i hate to slow play. as for pot limit...raise the pot preflop, raise the pot after the flop, and keep the aggression on. of course, be prepaired to fold if you need to. as for limit...just raise and reraise until bets are capped and again keep on the aggression. Here if a straight draw shows or theres 3 to a flush, i would just call bets. you hand could still win and the pot should be pretty decent by now, but no reason you should commit more with a straight or flush showing. eh...i really dont play limit so this isnt from experience..just theory. |

Usually, I bet high preflop. And high right after the flop. If something dangerous comes up on the flop - like - say, two kings, and someone calls or raises from a later position, I would lay down. If an ace comes up, I usually try for a check-raise. In late-game with very big blinds, and few players, you may find that going all-in preflop works for you, but often you want to be called with that hand, unless you are happy enough just stealing blinds, so make sure the opposition is not too scared of gambling.

ok....the professional way to play pocket aces.....pre-flop raise between 4 and 5 times the big blind. Then if you get a couple callers, you might want to try to push all but one out with a big raise. If he is still in the hand and your hand still hasn't improved, let him do the betting on the turn (they usually bet the actual value of their hand on the turn) so that you can see exactly how good thier hand is. On the river, if you want you can check raise, or do the initial betting, mabey an all-in if you still feel you have it.
you also have to know when to lay it down...if someone bets on a K and then bets when another K comes on the river....you have to know that your aces didn't hold up Last edited by t7i7m8c8 : 31-07-2005 at 5:04 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

If the pot's already been raised and has a decent amount in it, I'll go all in with Aces, if someone calls you probably double up, if not you've still won some money.
I think it's better to risk only winning a small pot by raising strongly than it is to risk losing a big pot by letting people see a cheap flop. |

In early position I would limp in b4 flop hoping for a raise so I can reraise in the middle I would do the same and late I would raise off the bat hoping someone would raise me watching the flop though for straight possibilities alot more to it than just what I write but basically I got this strategy from super system and for the most part have had some success using it, it can be found on page 453 of first super system book also how to play KK and when to fold KK great advice and well worth using as part of your game plan

I admit it, I firstly joined for the freeroll passwords. But i always come on because its ace and a good place to get advice from other players
Also i go all in with AA or raise a lot. If you dont you can get beat by a crap hand. I have beat AA with 10 6 (full house) and with 8 4 off suite (got a full house again) so i tend to go for a double up and if no one calls then you hav won some blinds. position. If in late position and there was a raise, go all-in. If people were just trying to limp in, make a raise... and then bet very aggressively after the flop. |

I hate it when people dont raise at all w/AA in a 6 seated table.
A couple of times ive been busted by this. For example, one time i had KK in late position so i raise heavily n then i notice early position re-raising me all in, im thinkin he has lower pockets or maybe just A-high so i call n what do you know, hes got them ACES n i end up losing. I hate it when people slow play AA in a 6 seated table, i could understand if it was a 10 seated table but whatever, they leave themself open to getting busted by the big blind special. |

If you do not raise w/ AA you are asking to be sucked out.
Do not slow-play pocket aces. You should raise 3-4X the blind and hope that one player bites. If two call, then your risk of winning goes from 85% into the 70's%. |
