How much to deposit?
I am about to receive a nice windfall from the sale of an investment and wanted to know how much I should deposit for an online bankroll.
I know about not using more than 5% at any one time in NL cash games and 2% for MTTs. My question is this: Is it better to build a bankroll from say $100 and learn to win at each level or just give yourself a bankroll high enough so that you are properly rolled for the higher limits? |

It depends on how much you are willing to deposit and if you feel you can beat the limits that you want to play. If you have a lot of spare cash lying around and don't feel like grinding up from the micro, micro stakes, then deposit a larger amount and see how you do. If you have never played online before, I suggest you start at a lower limit just to get acclamated. Playing online is a lot different than playing live. At a casino, u will probably see worse players playing at 1/2 than u will online at .05/.10.

I've been playing online for almost two years but more seriously in just the last few months. For some reason, my best game is at SNG. I can wait patiently for a hand and watch everyone else go crazy, at the $1 table on PokerStars, its down to 6 before the blinds go up to 25/50. My win rate is about 25% and I cash in at least half.
I have been playing cash games with some success but I find myself impatient and too loose. I can't seem to get past that I'm only betting .40, not 4x BB. And I see other's success on here and want to increase my BR to that level now, not three months from now. I should clarify the two statements above. When I am playing a patient style and am fully focused, I can and do have success at ring games. But when I get a bad beat or just plain get beaten I can't seem to bounce back like I do at a SNG. Maybe I should go play live to see what that's like. I have always played limit at the casino but maybe with the experience learned online, I shoud give a session of $1/$2 NL a try. |

My advice would be this. Consider your skill level (what limits you have played and you think you can win at consistently ) and what type of games you prefer, cash, sng's mtts. Then decide what amount you can afford to lose. Once you have decided this then go for it. But please use BRM.

Thanks Jagsti for the advice and reminder. That was my problem when i first started playing online, having my entire bankroll on the table with me. I have become aware of the need to preserve the BR so I can keep playing even if I hit a bad streak or two. (or 3,4, you get the idea).

Great point! Bonus whoring and rakeback deals are a must if your gonna increase that BR.

When I make my deposit on Full Tilt, I'm going to be coughing up around $300 to $350. Dont know if this helps you or not, but it might lol. An amount like this will pretty much give you freedom to play any game in the lower limits
