How long is too long.

How long do you think is too long to check/bet/raise? Does it make a difference if its a free game playing in a league?

When someone types in the chat box: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz - its too long. LOL

generally take the same amount of time every time to help not give away your hand. As far as how long that is it is just as long as it takes to make your choice. In limit your expected to act quicker due to the fact that it is not considered as big a decision but in no limit relatively quick play is always appriciated by your competition

If you're waiting on purpose to give false information I wouldn't even bother. Most of the online competition is so weak they wouldn't know a move one way or another.. I always try to play straightforward; it's actually unexpected, usually..

If you're playing tournaments not online, I say the table should set a time limit.

If you have the nuts , you want to make your opponent think its a tough decesion for you to play, so he will bluff again. too long isnt long enough...lol

I hate when people do this, it is so rude. Sometimes people are really just trying to think their hand through, especially those of us who are still learning, and a lot of times people don't wait very long before typing in the ZZZZZZ. I know paradise has a think tank and you only have a certain amount of time to make your move I assume other sites have something similar...as long as you make your move before your hand is automatically folded you're fine

you cant make a quick decision. but you cant make a long one either

sometimes i bet fast and sometimes i bet slow,it might confuse the other players, you can call it changing gears or whatever but i noticed when i do that a guy that was betting fast all of a sudden slows down and starts thinking,MMMMMMMM whats he got and sometime it makes them fold>>buckster436

I try to notice betting patterns and read into them, for example, long pauses meaning it's a tough decision, etc. But really, how reliable can this be, a long pause could be the result of someone on a bad internet connection or someone that just isn't paying attention, only to look up and find the nuts, or someone that is playing on multiple tables and isn't much of a multi tasker.

As for how long you should take, you should take as much time as you need/want. It is courteous to act quickly, but if I see someone hit the zzzzzzzzz when someone takes 3 seconds to make a move, I will sometimes start taking longer too, so that I can put them on tilt.

Also, if someone bets big and you take a couple seconds to make your decision and they hit you with a zzzz or something that could be a tell, they are either eager for you to call or to fold (you just gotta figure out which one )

In the online games I've been in, the software sets a time limit, so I'd say as long as you act before your time limit is up, you're ok. I've seen people slow play on purpose in tourneys just to try to last a little longer.

HA - if you think taking more time is a betting pattern - or tell, not true. I use it to fool my opponents into thinking that hmmmm,,,, shall I bet or not -- it works!

But, anyone going into Paradise's think tank is probably reading a poker book on what to do next. LOL

Just kidding! LOL but people who consistently take forever to play is very annoying. Why make poker table enemies - I know people are thinking ... let's get this guy outta here.

I've been guilty of this: Playing in a tourney and finding yourself on the bubble and slowing down in the hopes that someone else on another table will go out before you. (I know, I know, that's evil...lol)

I usually give time takers the benefit of the doubt. They are either thinking about a hand, playing in more than one tourney or something like that. However, once I was playing at a table with a totally obnoxious pot bully. This other girl at the table got so sick of him that she informed him she'd be taking the maximum time on every hand, and boy was she ever true to her word. That had to be the longest online tourney in recorded history...lol!

It is common for people who are short stacked to take more time when you are on the bubble.
The funny thing is when tables are being dealt hand-for-hand but someone still stalls every time.

You have to be careful though, if you stall too much or too early people will try to knock you out so that the game will speed up.

I've played online long enough to know that the speed with which someone makes a decision is pretty useless as any sort of tell. I pay zero attention to it, unless I'm at the final table in a tournament because I figure the game has everyone's undivided attention at that point. Here's my quick list of reasons why someone's taking forever to move...

1.) They're trying to figure it out.
2.) They have a slow or broken connection with the server.
3.) They're playing multiple tables and are busy on the other(s).
4.) The phone rang.
5.) Someone's at the door.
6.) Their spouse wishes to discuss something other than the gutshot draw.
7.) They became engrossed with what was on tv and forgot it was their turn.
8.) They're busy checking the latest posts at Cardschat.com.
9.) They're instant messaging a real poker player to ask what to do.

Of that brief list, only one has anything to do with the game at hand. Reaction time is a badly overrated tell.

The thing I find fun is when someone does it deliberately. I was in in a tourney the other week, and this guy was taking FOREVER. I was just sitting back thinking "Ah, mind games..." and not letting it bother me. You should have seen the other players. Hurling all kinds of abuse. He took it all, and just kept on taking forever. The reaction was exactly what he wanted. he was trying to aggravate the other players, and they were giving it away that it was working. Foolish.

The ONLY thing that irks me with that is they're hamstringing themselves, as well as the other players. Less hands get played, meaning less money changes hands, meaning shorter stacks, so in the long term, it's a dumbass strategy. This guy would take the entire time he was allowed pre-flop and use it, then if he stayed in, he'd do the same every go round. They got him out in the end, but not before several players had completely freaked out.

Basically when there is real money involved then you should have about a minute or so online anymore than that and you are probably thinking too much. Live games put your chip on your cards and either hehe

Having time to think it out is everyones right regardless of what other say. If theres someone whos really rude and makes comments I just put em on ignore and do it more often lol. Anyway its tolerable as long as someone doesnt do it every hand! You can tell if theyre just thinking which is ok and if theyre on 5 tables at once etc some silly reason then i get annoyed.

I think that you should'nt wait until the turn card. Someone with a lower hand could hit something big. You should win it when you cn and not wait no matter what the pot is.

Exactly! I often find myself wondering, how hard can it be? Fold, Check, Call, Raise...figure it out, shouldn't be that hard. The most annoying is in limit games. I mean come on! You've got the auto prompt, use it. But I suppose, in the end, RammerJammer is right....again! lol

This does happen a lot at paradise poker. Couple of seconds n zzzzzzzzzzzz. Makes me want to punch them in the head.

I try not to use auto bet or auto check or raise because I like to see everyones reaction in front of me before deciding.

I use the auto prompt all the time. Especially when i'm on multiple tables. Just like the time delay, it means nothing. Your sitting there with an un playable hand, what do you care if everyone knows it. If it's marginal and your in good position then lay off the button. As far as the delay, take your time of course, it's your dime. But there are people that take a full minute every time they bet. I will sometimes insert a pregnant pause before a call or a raise. For me that's about 10 seconds. Maybe once per tournament I'll have a real decision to make and will use all my allotted time.

I have been guilty of all execpt for number 9, I try to hurry up when I play, If I'm doing something, I'll have my bro fold.

I hate people that zzzzz. I'll ask them if they're tired and need a nap and if they do please leave.

I think it is okay to take your time and think your decision through once in a while (when you really need to replay the hand in your head to make a decision), but to take the maximum allowed time everytime like many players do is just obnoxious.
