How do you play when you first sit down?

I read a lot about how people play when at tight/loose tables and againt tight/loose players but is everyones take on when you first sit down?

Do you generaly play tighter than normal until you get a feel for the table and then play your game or do you let your presence be know off the bat?

I had a tendency to just jump straigt into my game but have found lately that I will sit back for a while.

Also do you do the same thing when in tournaments?

Depends if I know the players that I'm playing against. If not, I would play tight until i get a feel for the table. If so, I might play a little more aggressive.

Many times I play stupid at first if I can show my cards cheaply. Then when I play my normal game, the table has me pegged as junk player. This has worked well for me in the past. The first impression is a lasting impression

I play mainly STT's, and in these there's just no reason to get involved with anything other than premium hands in the beginning. I usually have notes on at least 3 players at the table, but still, the blinds are relatively small compared to your chip stack, so I let the crazies fight eachother for awhile. at a full table STT u can see 30 hands for 90chips, throw them all away, and still have 910 chips left. I play ultra-tight until about 5-6 players are left, or the blinds reach 50-100. This works pretty good for me.

Usually, I will watch the play until I get comfortable, play premium hands, and some junky ones to throw everyone else off. It is cheap enough to play some hands, and it makes a statement that you are loose at the table. Thats how I want people to think, and if it costs me 50-100 chips, that's ok. Then when you tighten up and play the primo hands, it helps you make a lot more money.

I'll often be inclined to wait for the blind to come round, so I get a chance to peg the other players, then play relatively loose initially, to get people think I'll play anything, then play more carefully...
If I get a good hand on the first Big Blind, though, I may see if I can keep a rush going and scare the other players - winning 3 or more hands in a row in Limit will tend to start getting other players scared, and I can then push them around a bit...

In a ring game though, how many opponents will have sat with you for the whole hour? The image you've projected the previous hour is irrelevant to someone who's just sat down.

I hate jumping into a game and catching a medium strength hand. like say K,J suited. you don't know how the other players are playing yet. and it makes it tough to make the right call. if you raise will everyone call? with a junk hand ? i like to know the texture of the game before i have to make cold calls.
