Strategy How did you come by yours?

I am sadly wanting for a solid strategy with which I consistently play. Seems that the only strategy that I have is to mix it up, ALL THE TIME. this hasn't been working too good for me.

Do you feel that you have a personal strategy or do you tend to follow what a particular player recommends?

What methods have you employed to develop your own personal strategy, loads of practice, studying, feed back from other players?

Please advise.

I think a players strategy essentially just falls into place. Studying strategy, watching others, and firsthand experience over time bring your play together naturally.

The way I go about building strategy is by studying here on CC and in books then going to the tables with a game plan, trying to employ tactics I've learned and then tweaking things until they work for me.

You're strategy is whatever wins. Play, Learn, Observe, and Play more poker.

Over years of playing live games, long before the days of computers and online poker. Even then, most good players are constantly tweaking their game and learning to adapt to positions, players and situations.

Mixing it up, and knowing WHEN to do that, is very important to not becoming totally predictable.

over time through reading books, watching videos and playing, you kind of develop a strategy of what actually works for you. I don't think just copying a persons strategy is optimum because all that does is make your play robotic. There's no thought that goes into your play if your copying someone elses strategy. If your in a situation that is not part of the strategy your copying you cant react to the situation because you didn't train yourself to think on your own.

Me too...although after losing money for a couple years I decided to follow/stalk a player who consistently made the leaderboard at the small Commerce Casino Tournys held at the time.

I mimic'd his style and played a better ring and Tourny game (at the time anyway).

My humble suggestion (if you are lost on a strategy) is to spend a few dollars to join one of the several excellent video services to pick up strategy from the best online players, and also to keep deeply involved in CC's strategy sections, hand analysis and other helpful guidance offered on this site.

Really, the small amount of money these sites charge is more than worth it once your game moves to the next level

I came to this site with little to no idea what i was doing, however I thought i did haha. Reading through books taught me the fundamentals and all that good stuff. Can't go wrong w/ Harrington on Hold'em.

However, the biggest improvement in my game came from posting hands and commenting on hands in the Hand Analysis sections. There are some guys who post in there regularly who have more wordly skill than I could ever hope to obtain. You just have to be ready for some criticism but if you're looking to improve your game and learn some decent strategy then that should not be an issue.

Also there is a pretty big video thread http://www.cardschat.com/f53/index-c...-games-149137/ (http://www.cardschat.com/f53/index-cardschat-members-videos-cash-games-149137/) full of cash and tourney videos, many of which have been commented on. So that's a goldmine of strategy right there.

So I'd take a few strategies to the table and see what ends up suiting your fancy. If you're playing tourneys hopefully you mix it up at critical points in the tourney (early, mid, bubble, FT, etc).

Sorry to ramble but another point that it took me a while to learn was to play my opponents and not my cards, as cliched as it may sound it will really help your game if you can pin a style on your opponent and exploit him accordingly. Sometimes the best strategy is just to adapt to the table.

A boat load of stupid plays and reading about the fundamentals. Nothing beats loads of practice and patience.

Read Harrington several times, then railed several top leaders on the Tournament Leader Board to see theory in action.

I have read the harrington books several times, and it is a great book to read, as it is written in such a way that it easy to understand

I remember nananoko who makes millions playing online say that he used trial and error. If something doesn't work, find out why and change to something that works. I suppose that is one way everyone will learn through experience and also reading books, reading strategy forums and analyzing their own play.

There is no such thing as a strategy in the terms that you are outlining.

Go to college and learn game theory.

The one thing I will say is to my development. I am by no means a good player however I have learned a ton. I am going to start trying to post more hands in the HH section and start to comment on other's hands as this really helps me think a hand over. My style is to read and practice what I learned. Hopefully, one day I will become a good player with practice.

Watch, study and practise. Get experience and u will find the strategy that suits to u better.

Any way, u should get used to mix ur strategy when needed

I'm sure it's already been said in the thread but to have a good strategy you need to learn to WATCH! by that I mean, watch players, take notes and update notes on players. The more you watch, the more you can learn about those players and exploit their weaknesses, but at the same time you have to realize the other 8 players your sitting at the table with are watching you.

I really agree with this..... ad I ould add it is crucial to review your hands each session.
