High PP early On in tourney, what do you do?

This is something that has affected me and im sure a lot of people on this forum before.

Ok so heres the scenario, you are in a tournament and you are dealt AA KK QQ or something similar early on. Some idiot ahead of you goes all in.

Do you call and risk your tournament life for a chance to double up and be in control or do you fold, shrug it off and move on.

Ok i assume we talking freerolls wtf is the question of course u call maybe if higher buy in tourny u think but fr iunsta call every day of every week of every year of every decade of every century of every millenium of time

With the Kings or Aces I would call. Maybe not with the Queens though. Just because the tournys early shouldn't make a difference if you have a good hand. The only thing to be careful of is when multiple people are all in early

Like Stefan said - it`s a no-brainer.

With AA or KK you call whether its early or not, FR or buy-in. With QQ its up to you, anything less I fold. It is true that things change though if you're not HU. In that case QQ is an sure fold, AA is still a call (in a 3 handed pot AA will still win 70% of the time), KK is up to you. If 3 players or more have gone all-in before you early in a tourney call with 7-2o and bust cuz you're likely playing with a bunch of donks and you're wasting your time (lol).

AA, KK, QQ, JJ, TT - all of the above mixed and suited or off suited - i'm jumping in with all four legs and grinning stupidly as well. Lower pairs can lure me in there as well, if enough opponents are in. Especially when more people before me go in. I know it decreases my chances, but it also makes the possible win better.

Weirdly, I play almost reverse when playing other tournaments. As an example, i'm currently down to 24 pct flops seen and a 57 pct showdown victory score in a tourney on Bodog. At the same time ive been playing this one, i crashed and burned out of the daily 1000 USD on Ladbrokes in a 5 player all-in. Maybe multiple personalities... Donk, fish and ???

EDIT: Right after posting i took a go at an opponent that had been annoying me with raises. Second bet was all in with AJ and a flop showing 2 2 7. Bastard had K7...

Depends if you are in a tourney with a bunch of DONKS!!!! The right call would be yes with AA or KK. QQ only if you do not put him on AK, AA, or KK, because it would be putting your tournament life at risk while dominanted or slight favor.

AA, KK, call the upfront all-in.

AK, QQ, or under, no way. Not early on. Not even in the middle stages. You can't win if you're not at the table anymore. Think "survival". All that matters is getting to the final table. Period. Better to fold those pocket Jacks and live to fight another day than to jump off the bridge with a hand that's probably behind going to the flop. Survive, survive, survive. Period.

All depends on the type of tournament here. Donkeys go all-in that early in freerolls or small buy-in events when the blinds are low when they have the following hands:

A-10 through A-K
Small to medium pocket pairs (2s-10s)

I had this situation come up a few weeks ago in a small bounty tournament on the very first hand of the tourney - monkey first to act shoves all-in, and I have pocket 10s. Most posters, I'm guessing, would fold here...I happen to think that's the wrong play in this type of tournament, however.

Look, the worst thing you're looking at is opponent has JJ or QQ - you can almost certainly rule out KK or AA here. Most likely, you're either ahead in a coinflip, or your pair is a 4-1 favorite over a smaller pair. In order to go deep in any MTT tournament, you're more than likely going to have to win a few hands like this in a row, anyways.

We've been taught from reading numerous poker books and sites that you have push your edges when you have them - why wouldn't we do this here? Sure, you might go busto on the first hand of the tournament, but winning the hand gives you that much more of an edge to go deep into the tourney, instead of merely limping into the money.

Exactly the kind of brash machismo I'm cautioning against here. Going bust on the first hand of a tournament should NEVER be a position you put yourself in, short of getting your Aces cracked. And how deeply you go in any tournament is never going to be determined in the first hour, or even the first couple of hours. Patience. Survival. Let the other guys drag out the rulers and measure their tools. "I was playing to win, not just cash" is the ultimate loser's mantra. You can't win if you don't cash. You can't win if you don't make the final table. But you can sure miss all of the above because you pushed too hard, too quick, with too little.

Well said Rammer. The concept of having to win coinflips to make it deep might be true, however it doesn't have to happen so early when you put your whole stack in jeopardy. Sure, later on you certainly will face some of those, but hopefully after you have built a stack and the smaller ones start going all-in.

I've said this many times: the pros don't like to go all-in preflop, only if they have to because they're shortstacked or they have to call a shortstack. If you consider yourself the better player you should avoid coinflips early for your whole stack, period. That can include folding QQ. It certainly does include folding TT.

P.S.: football note for Rammer. Coach Bryant was great, so were those teams of the 70's, but now I feel sorry for Tide fans having Nick Saban. They certainly deserved better than someone who will pack in 2 years saying he "loved" Alabama but "had" to go.

I would push AA and be cautious with KK, QQ just because your opponent always has a chance to have AA.

I'm pretty much with the consensus on this; Call with the rockets and cowboys, but without a decent read on the opponent(s), put down the Qs and wait for a better op.

i would call the all in u have no shame in loosing with a high pocket pair and also u are either gonna double or triple up which that will be in ur favor also so i would not hesitate with going all in from the door

Just returned from the Alabama spring scrimmage, known around these parts as "A-Day". Official attendance? 92,136. Standing room only at Bryant-Denny Stadium for a practice game. The fire marshalls closed the stadium gates in the second quarter, and it's being speculated that 120,000 to 130,000 fans were on campus for the game, with thousands being unable to enter. The previous national record for spring scrimmage attendance was Tennessee with a mere 73,000 in 1986.
