Going the Distance $1 Tournaments

Hey Everyone,

Last Night, I played in a $1 NL Hold'em Tournament... with over 890 players... made it down to the final table and finished in 4th place.

I won $73.... but what's more important is that I won that $1 from the Ferguson Freeroll... so it's been a good week for me...

and I ow it all to patients, waiting for the right moment to make my move... never bluffing... unless the right opportunity came along...

$1 tourneys are breathing grounds for DONKEYS so you got to be patient... for the first hour... let them kill each other... after the first hour they are pretty much gone... by the end of the second hour everyone is playing a lot tighter, so you can make more moves to win the pot...

good move. these donks in the $1 games will not lay down anything. Can't bluff an idiot.

I would only advise bluffing once you are deep in the tourney against the players who are good enough to lay cards down.

1st Of all, Nice job .Now for $1 tournies, I'd play really tight in the 1st hour, people will play and shove(!) any 2 cards which resembles anything good. I'd stick tight and play only top 10 hands while the donks knock themselves out.By the second hour the level of play will have dramtically increased so you might be able to play some more hands and get down to some real poker. also the players will have got a lot tighter by this time. As you get to the late stages, the play will be surprisingly good for such a low buy in tournie, many people here will take it seriously ( and you should to!) People will be very tight, and blind stealing will become what you need to do.At the final table, play tight, play your game. And hopefully it'll pay off. When you get to shorthanded, try to blind steal, lots of people here will be weak at this type of game..Then Win!

nice job on turning 1$ into 73$....patience is always a key thing during a poker game but during a 1$ game its more important cuz there are donks all over the place and they'll take themselves out by bluffing but maybe a couple times get lucky but eventually the luck runs out and there chips end up in ur stack or someone elses....ill be in a 6 max 1$ tourny running in 15 min on FT and hoping alot of entries for some good prize money....and i need a good finish to help me cope with falling asleep during last nights midnight madness i won a sat. into...wake up this morning and notice i blinded out 100 spots out of the money...cant beleive i fell asleep but oh well

That an awesome return from 1 to 73. It has taken me some time to go from 12 to 62 so I say congrats to you. I am learning a lot and my past 2 weeks have been better for me. I have patience to finish in the money on these micro tourneys but then seem to lose it and only finish on the low end. I have been winning at HU lately so I find the long tourneys boring. Today I made it to the money and only won 1.43 on the 1.10 PL game at PS.

if you can survive all the times you have the donk's as a 3 1/2 to 1 dogs then you should be able to make a deep run, lately my hands have not been holding up early in tourny's, the last three that i have entered i have went out AK vs AQ, its pretty sick. Glad here you did good though, 4th out 890 is very good.

yes those sort of tours,,, and even the free rolls i get asked why do i bother, its such a long for such a small payout.
BUT
its all in the process, at least i have won something if i make it to the final few
and most of the time its MORE than what you outlayed.
It also gives you time to build your game play,
test what sort of player you are

perfect your strageties

IMHO you're putting too much value AK at a full table. It's the only way I can figure AQ could put you out. Last night I pushed pretty deep in a smaller tournament, but was R&A and wouldn't ya know it? Player after player was rebuying like mad until the first break. Then I saw the then chip leader add on to get 2k she didn't actually need. Oh well, her money, helped the prize pool, can't complain, but can't figure her out.

Now to the real point, deep in the tournament I had AK. I was in early position and made a small raise, three players pushed so that one was all-in after me. I paused and folded AK and it was the right thing to do. I would have gone out with AK and one of my opponents lost with it.

I never would have considered folding that hand pre-cardschat. I would have pushed all-in before the hand even made it to late position. Now I'm thinking Do I really wanna risk it with what would be the bad side of a coin-flip heads up? Suited or not it's pretty coin-flippy if you go all-in preflop. Post flop you have to consider what your opponent's holding, be cautious of the baby cards too. I'm sorry about your AK getting beaten by AQ but at least your opponents weren't holding utter crap.

yes those one dollar tournaments are a test of patience...you get alot of cats in there with a hard on with the 1 dollar they won in a freeroll and think its time to donk out this tournie also....i often get stuck playing so tight that by the time we are in the money im down below 10 BBs...well done on the final table M8 gl

Nice job. I like playing the ferguson because it truly is an almost total donkfest, and just by being patient you can make the money after only about 2 hours or so into the tournament.
